Children’s skin care products blamed for rise in skin allergies

Skin care products and cosmetics are causing a dramatic increase in skin allergies in children, the European Academy for Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) has claimed.

The number of youngsters suffering from problems such as patches of itchy skin, blisters and eczema has doubled in recent years and the EAACI believes that body lotions, moisturisers, deodorants, makeup and other cosmetics could be to blame.

It has said that allergens like artificial fragrances or preservatives, found in many children’s skin care products, could be triggering contact dermatitis.

The Chairman of the 2010 EAACI Skin Allergy Meeting said: “More and more children are using specific make-up products that are triggering an allergic reaction on their young skin.

“At the Congress, we are going to address this issue and make sure a correct diagnosis, a successful treatment and, above all, a widespread prevention are put into place.”
