Does organic sun lotion provide enough protection for children?
‘Yes’ is the quick answer!
Children’s skin is much more sensitive than adults’ and it is only natural that
parents want to ensure that Organic sun lotions can
provide the protection that they need. Fortunately there is nothing to worry about
because at Green People our priorities are to provide our customers – and their
families – with natural sun care products which are just as effective as those they
are used to – and sometimes more so.
UVB protection
UVB rays cause sunburn and tingling after a period of exposure, and affect only
the top layers of skin. Most people recognise that sun lotions help to protect against
UVB rays, and indeed they do, as this is what the SPF relates to.
Green People has a number of Organic sun lotions,
with SPFs ranging from 8 to 25. The children’s sun lotions are at the highest end,
as young skin is more delicate and susceptible to burning. SPF25 sun lotion is the
highest factor that we can make with natural ingredients at the moment, but it is
more than adequate for nearly all. Please note that as with all sunscreens, it should
be reapplied every 2 hours for continued protection, and children should stay out
of the sun between 12 and 3.
UVA protection
UVA rays are less understood than their UVB companions, but unfortunately are also
more dangerous. They penetrate deep into the skin and have been linked with skin
cancer, as well as premature ageing and other cell damage. It is thus really important
to ensure that your child’s sun lotion provides adequate UVA protection.
Most people are used to looking for the SPF of a sun lotion to find out its effectiveness,
but this only applies to UVB protection and doesn’t give any indication of its ability
to guard against UVA rays. Unfortunately, there is no international equivalent for
UVA protection. Under testing, our organic sun lotions’ UVA protection was found
to be between 70% and 75% of that of its UVB protection – easily surpassing industry
