Why don’t we have any organic sun lotions with more than SPF25?

Woman skipping on Beach Green People’s selection of organic sun lotions ranges from SPF8 for those with a dark complexion to SPF25 for children, who have the most delicate and sensitive skin. Most people find that they do not need a higher SPF sun lotion than that but we are sometimes asked why it is that we do not have an SPF30 or higher, like some of the high street sun cream companies.

The reasons are two-fold:

1. We are constrained by the natural ingredients which we use for our organic sun lotions
2. The way in which SPF ratings work means that SPF30 offers little more protection than SPF25

Natural ingredients

We are committed to using natural, safe ingredients in our organic sun lotions, and this is the reason that many people choose to use our products. We are able to get up to SPF25 UVB protection with our current natural sun products, but we have yet to find a natural way of providing a higher SPF level and still have a lotion which is easy to apply and use.

SPF ratings

However, we feel that our organic sun lotions provide adequate protection for most people. In reality, the level of additional protection offered by SPF ratings higher than 25 is fairly insignificant. For example, a sun lotion with SPF25 will stop all but 4% of UVB light getting through to the skin whilst an SPF30, in comparison, stops all but 3% - a increase in protection of just 1%.
