Natural skin care: gentle on sensitive skin
Sensitive skin is probably the most common of skin conditions, with up to 7 in 10 people reporting that they would describe their skin as sensitive. In this article we will look at what causes sensitive skin and how natural skin care products can offer relief from irritation for some.
What causes sensitive skin?
The reason that so many people have sensitive skin is unknown but some believe it may be connected to the chemicals to which we are all exposed in every day life. There are many harsh chemicals that we come into contact with without even realising. For example, did you know that escalator hand rails are sometimes infused with Triclosan, an antibacterial agent that has been linked with a range of health concerns?
Our exposure to chemicals is so widespread that even newborn babies have been found to have a variety of toxins in their blood through their mothers’ exposure. One study found eight different skin care contaminants in umbilical cord samples, including artificial fragrances, phthalates and the above-mentioned Triclosan.
This constant exposure to harsh chemicals, taken together with factors such as stress and pollution, may contribute to the high number of people suffering from sensitive skin. By choosing to use gentler, natural skin care products, you can help to reduce the number of synthetic chemicals to which you are exposed.
Natural skin care and sensitive skin
Synthetic chemicals such as artificial fragrances, sodium lauryl sulphate and parabens are all common causes of reactions in those with sensitive skin. The reactions can take a variety of forms – in some, they will cause dryness and itching, whilst others will develop spots or rashes. Sodium lauryl sulphate in particular is known to be a skin irritant but can be found in a wide range of high street shampoos, shower gels, toothpastes and liquid soaps – anything that foams.
Fortunately, you won’t find these ingredients in most natural skin care products. However, it is worth getting products that have been certified organic to guarantee that the harsh ingredients listed above are not being used. As well as being made without harsh, irritating chemicals, natural skin care products also contain amazing plant-derived ingredients that nourish, soothe and hydrate very effectively. Ingredients such as Hemp and Evening primrose oil are rich in Omega-6 fatty acids (excellent for dry skin), Lavender and Chamomile are soothing and calming, while Seaweed and Avocado have moisture-binding properties.
Whilst it is possible to be allergic to absolutely any ingredient, natural or synthetic, it is commonly the harsher artificial chemicals which can cause irritation to sensitive skin. However, people with very irritable skin can find that some essential oils can aggravate their condition so we have developed a fragrance free range of products that do not contain any essential oils. They are ultra mild so are ideal for people with extremely sensitive skin.
