6th January 2012 - Parabens in cosmetics could soon be banned in Europe

The use of some parabens in cosmetics could be banned under new proposals from the European Commission.

For years parabens have been widely used by many major beauty companies in products ranging from face creams to mascara because of their preservative properties.

The move to ban them comes after years of lobbying by various groups concerned about the safety of ingredients in skin care and other beauty products.

The following are the types of parabens under scrutiny:

  • Isopropylparabens
  • Isobutylparabens
  • Pentylparabens
  • Phenylparabens
  • Benzyl esters of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid and their salts

If the move is approved, it would also mean a reduction in the maximum concentration of propylparabens and butylparabens allowable in cosmetics.

Paraben-Free Products

At present parabens are so widely used that it can be difficult to find cosmetics that do not contain them.

Green People is a natural beauty company dedicated to offering paraben-free products and all of its organic products are made without this class of chemicals. Green People also avoids other ingredients such as SLS and artificial perfumes to ensure its products are gentle on sensitive skin.
