20/08/2010 - Consumers urged to buy direct from cosmetics brands
Northern Ireland Trading Standards is advising consumers to purchase cosmetics direct from the manufacturer and from reputable stores after counterfeit make up was discovered in a shopping complex. Please note that this does not concern Green People products.
In a number of cases fake mascara, eyeshadows and eyeliners that appear to be from big brands have been found being sold at marked down prices.
According to the Trading Standards officer, telling real from fake can be very difficult, especially when purchasing online, and warned of the dangers of using counterfeit cosmetics.
“Consumers don’t often realise these goods are cheaper is because they are badly made and the make-up can sometimes be dangerous.”
He went on to warn that using counterfeit make up that has not been made with the correct ingredients has lead to serious rashes and allergic reactions, particularly around the eye area.
Common sense
He urged consumers to have common sense when purchasing cosmetics and turn down deals that are too good to be true.
“For instance if a brand name mascara is on sale on a website for a tenner when it would normally retail for £20 then the chances are it is going to be fake.
“The majority of brand name make-up is only sold from reputable stores and genuine articles are less likely to be found in market stalls or on independent websites.”
Note: There have been no instances of Green People's organic make up being counterfeited but you can check which independent retailers are registered with us by calling 01403 740350.
