17th June 2010 - 2 in 3 wish to avoid GM ingredients
A new study has come out showing that 2 in 3 families wish to avoid genetically modified (GM) ingredients in their food.
Many of the main supermarkets have been criticised for selling milk and meat from animals fed using GM crops, and many of those surveyed – 63% – would like to see stores only selling products from GM free sources.
A spokesperson for a GM pressure group said: “…the British public appears to remain very sceptical. These results send a very clear message that any weakening of policies on the import and use of GM feed will not be welcomed by the public.
“They are demanding that there should be a clear non-GM choice.”
At Green People, we use many natural ingredients in our organic skin care products and are often asked by customers whether they contain genetically modified organisms.
We always use non-GM sources and are careful to research every single ingredient thoroughly.
However, what many people do not realise is that organic certification gives an added reassurance that genetically modified ingredients have not been used.
Bodies such as The Soil Association and the Organic Food Federation are both against the use of GM material and will not certify a product as organic if it contains such ingredients.
The Soil Association offers detailed information about its position on GM, whilst the Organic Food Federation offers the following statement on its website:
“The organic regulation does not permit the inclusion of any genetically modified material in any organic product.”
You can therefore be confident that buying certified organic products - like the natural skin care range from Green People - is a good way of also choosing non-GM.
