Green People donates £9,000 to Zambian educational project
7th December 2011
Green People has donated £9,000 to an Oxfam project dedicated to educating orphans and vulnerable children in Zambia.
With one of the highest rates of HIV and AIDS in the world, Zambia has a large population of children who have lost both their parents and cannot afford the books and uniform required to attend the schools set up by the government. In rural areas, distance is also an important factor as transport is expensive and not always even available.
A four-year project run by Oxfam has set out to change the educational fortunes of poor children in the country by improving the performance and facilities of community schools. In April 2011 the importance of these community schools was officially recognised by the government, which plans to offer the schools more help in providing quality education to pupils.
This project supports a wide range of activities, including:
- Training teachers
- Building toilets and water points in schools
- Providing desks and books
- Supporting schools in getting funding from the government
- Training ‘peer educators’ about AIDS and HIV
- Supporting after school clubs
All of this contributes towards a more successful schooling experience for thousands of children, both today and in future classes.
The work being undertaken by Oxfam is valuable not only in improving children’s educational performance but also in their very lives. Research shows that every extra year a girl spends at school could reduce child mortality by 10%.
