18th May 2010 - Pesticide link with ADHD in children

A recent study of children has revealed a possible link between pesticide residues and the condition ADHD.

The research, carried out by University of Montreal in Quebec and Harvard University, found that children with a high level of organophosphate residue in their urine had double the chance of being diagnosed with ADHD than those with average concentrations of the chemical.

It is not the first time that safety concerns have arisen about this class of pesticide, which is the most widely used type of insecticide in the world.

In 2007, the organophosphate Chlorpyrifos was studied for its neurological effects and was found to be linked with delays in learning, poorer physical coordination and behavioural problems – most notably ADHD.

However, more research is needed to determine whether the link between organophosphates and ADHD is causal or whether there is some other relationship.

With pesticides widely used in farming in the UK and across the world, the best way to keep your pesticide exposure to a minimum is by choosing to live an organic lifestyle.

It is for these reasons that Green People decided to create organic skin care products, rather than just natural ones. We always select certified organic ingredients wherever we can and as a result a high proportion of our products are certified by the Soil Association, EcoCert or the Organic Food Federation.
