13th January 2012 - Skin irritation puts off young men from shaving

Research by Mintel has shown that young men are most likely to suffer from skin irritation from shaving, with 50% reporting razor-related skin problems.

Shaving problems also affect some older men, with 27% of those aged between 55 and 64 complaining of issues such as razor burn and bumps.

The research found that younger men shave less regularly than older men and 42% put it off as long as possible – perhaps as a result of the discomfort experienced when shaving. There was also greater acceptance of facial hair as part of a well-groomed look amongst the younger generation.

A Mintel spokesperson said: “When it comes to shaving, there is a distinct generational divide between the young and the old, with younger Brits adopting a more relaxed attitude towards shaving compared to the older, more traditional approach, and to shave everyday is no longer seen as essential to look well groomed.

Moreover, one of the reasons why younger men are unwilling to shave may be razor burns due to their more sensitive skin.”
