What is MI?

MI stands for methylisothiazolinone and at one time this ingredient was a commonly used preservative in a broad range of beauty products.

MI is not permitted as an ingredient by any organic certification body worldwide. As such, all of our products have always been free from MI.

Are all beauty products methylisothiazolinone free?

Concerns around the allergen risk associated with MI led to a Europe-wide ban on its use as a skin care preservative and this is one of the many reasons why you will not find MI in leave-on skin care products that are made in the UK. These are products such as face creams and body lotions.

The ban on using methylisothiazolinone in leave-on beauty products has been in place in Europe since 2017. This ban is not in place worldwide and if you order skin care from outside of Europe, you will need to check the label to see whether it is an MI-free product.

A very low level of methylisothiazolinone is still permitted for use in rinse-off products; this very low level is generally well tolerated. However due to organic certification we use alternative preservatives so all of our shower gels, shampoos, conditioners and hand washes are MI-free.

Which preservatives do Green People use instead?

Instead of using MI, Green People use a range of mild preservatives including Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Levulinic Acid and Sorbic Acid.

We prefer to use preservatives that are present in nature, that are well suited to sensitive and eczema-prone skin and that are permitted by our organic certification bodies.

Wherever possible we choose to use packaging that requires less need for preservatives. Our airless pumps are a good example of packaging that requires less need for skin care preservatives, and you can shop our airless pump skin care products using the links below.
