How does each Herb/plant affect the human body?

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM (THE LIVER)

This system plays a vital role since it absorbs all of the nutrients from the food that we eat. These nutrients include carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and even water. All of these are essential to proper health and it is important to ensure that the highest levels possible are absorbed from the foods we eat.

As well as absorbing nutrients from our diet, the digestive system and in particular the liver plays an essential role in keeping the body clean internally. The modern diet is gradually becoming less pure. The vast majority of foods contain one or more toxic residues, just as the ground and drinking water contain residues of natural plant poisons. The liver is at the forefront of the fight against these foreign substances. The liver is an integral part of the regulation of the metabolism and at the same time it catabolises and removes toxic substances from the blood. Nowadays the liver is often overtaxed which may result in many different diseases.

The herbs known as "the bitter herbs" (bitter taste) play an important role in helping the liver function to the optimum level. Some of the best known ones are Wormwood, Dandelion, Artichoke and Gentian.

Wormwood boosts liver function and stimulates enzyme production from cells in the stomach and pancreas, so helping to break down recently consumed carbohydrates and proteins. The digestion is improved and food better absorbed.

Dandelion stimulates the liver and has a diuretic effect.

Artichoke is effective in stimulating the release of bile from the gall bladder and thereby ensures the break down of fats in our food. It also helps the detoxification process in the liver.

Gentian also helps the detoxification process and aids the decomposition of toxic substances in the liver.

Camomile is useful in conditions with indigestion, inflammation and gastritis. It has relaxing properties and will ease flatulence and dyspeptic pain.

Carrot has soothing and healing properties for the stomach. Carrots contain beta-carotene, a strong antioxidant.

THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM (CIRCULATION)

One of the most vital organs is the heart, which is responsible for healthy blood circulation.

Hawthorn is very effective in helping veins and arteries relax and contract. This is especially important for the heart, which has blood supplied via arteries. When these are relaxed there is a greater flow of blood taking oxygen and nutrients to the heart. A more efficient heart means better blood circulation and blood pressure decreases. Clinical studies have shown that Hawthorn helps to diminish many negative signs of stress.

Capsicum or Spanish pepper is most important in regulating blood pressure. It also helps to stimulate the circulation and increase energy.

Garlic and Ramsons are also very important to the cardiovascular system. Allicin, which is the active substance of garlic, decreases levels of cholesterol, reduces blood pressure, and improves circulation. It also decreases the levels of blood fats (triglycerides). All this helps give protection against cardiovascular diseases, one of the leading causes of premature deaths in the western world.

Oats have a double effect since they are stimulating and act as a tonic on the nervous system and the heart. They also increase muscular energy.

THE RENAL SYSTEM (KIDNEYS)

The most important function of the kidneys is the excretion of toxic substances. If the blood has a high content of toxic waste and the kidneys cannot excrete these, they are usually deposited in the fat deposits. In time, this may lead to different rheumatic complaints such as arthritis and gout. Once the toxic substances are deposited in the fatty tissues they are difficult to remove from the body.

Celery helps to break down these deposits of toxic waste.

Dandelion has a diuretic effect, which helps to expel these toxic substances via the kidneys. It is the leaf of the dandelion that is particularly effective in this way.

Common Nettle is also an excellent herb since it helps to remove surplus uric acid from the body. When nettle is freshly picked and used, it is the hairs on the stem that have an outstanding effect on many types of allergies.

THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Lapacho is extracted from the inner bark of a South American tree. The juice aids the body in several different ways. An example is the ability to increase oxygen intake. Lapacho also strengthens the immune system and gives increased protection against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Furthermore it is most effective in helping to reduce and prevent inflammation. The pharmaceutical industry has attempted to isolate the active substance but those attempts have so far not produced positive results. The secret of the effectiveness of Lapacho juice seems to be complicated synergy between several substances.

Garlic is known to have antiseptic and anti-viral properties. It is one of the most effective anti-microbial plants available, acting on bacteria, viruses and alimentary parasites. In general it may be used as a preventative for most infectious conditions, digestive as well as respiratory. For the digestive tract it has been found that Garlic will support the development of the natural bacterial flora whilst killing pathogenic organisms.

Ribwort is also an extremely interesting plant that has a special effect on the mucosa of the body. The mucous membranes are our most important protection against ingested toxic substances. The mucous membranes are just as essential to the internal organs as the skin is externally. Therefore, it is important that the membranes are in perfect condition. Our alimentary canal is lined with mucosa and all nutrients have contact with this lining on the way through the system. Our respiratory passages are also lined with mucosa and all oxygen and carbon dioxide pass through this mucous membrane which protects against damaging substances from the air. When you have a cold, extra quantities of mucus are produced which may prevent the absorption of oxygen and efficient elimination of carbon dioxide. Ribwort regulates the effect of colds on the mucosa, and thus the amount of mucus that is produced.

A HEALTHY VITALITY

Ginger acts as a carrier of energy, and passes on the energy released by capsicum. Ginger is also effective in conditions such as arthritis, dyspepsia and infections. Moreover, it is a strong antioxidant.

Capsicum is the most useful of the systemic stimulants. It is a general tonic and is specific for the circulatory and digestive system.

Garlic is among the few herbs that have a universal usage and recognition. Its daily usage aids and supports the body in ways that no other herb does.

SYNERGISTIC EFFECTS

The sixteen plants used to make Hawthorn & Artichoke Formula support and enhance each other producing a synergistic effect where the overall effect is greater than the sum of the individual parts. This effect is often observed in Nature and remains one of the many mysteries that science is striving to understand.

What we do know is that Hawthorn & Artichoke Formula is remarkably effective and that it fully deserves its description as “an everyday drink to help us survive in a polluted world.”
