What signs are there that I could be intolerant to fragrances?
The skin's reaction to fragrance chemicals can produce rashes, hives, dermatitis,
or eczema. Other symptoms can include watery eyes, nausea, sore throat, cough, and
chest tightness, headaches, the inability to concentrate, dizziness and fatigue.
Even essential oils can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Essential
oils naturally contain a range of fragrance compounds, amongst which are several
that, in isolation, have been shown to cause allergic reaction. These include substances
such as Linalool, Limonene and Geraniol which are found in Lavender, Orange and
Geranium respectively.
Most people can tolerate these naturally occurring fragrance ingredients even if
they are sensitive to the same substance when it is isolated or made synthetically.
However, those people with extreme sensitivities may need to avoid all forms of
