Why we love dry body brushing

Your skin is your largest organ and is responsible for one-quarter of the body's detoxification each day, making it, one of the most important elimination organs. The skin is also known as the ‘3rd’ kidney (lungs are known as the ‘2nd’ kidney).

" Your skin is responsible for one-quarter of the body's detoxification. "

Lightly brushing your skin with a dry, natural brush stimulates blood and lymphatic circulation, removes dead skin cells and encourages new cell growth.

Dry skin brushing helps control cellulite by bringing nutrients and oxygen to the upper layer of skin (the epidermis). Although there are no blood vessels in the epidermis, the dermis is rich with blood vessels, and the epidermis receives nutrients and oxygen supply from the dermis.

Benefits of body brushing

  • Removes dead skin cells and surface toxins
  • Makes your skin softer and smoother, fresher and brighter
  • Boosts your circulation and helps unclog pores
  • Accelerates the growth of new cells
  • Results in a more even tan and increased absorption of cellulite creams
  • New cells are better at absorbing moisture applied to the surface

How to body brush

Dry brush your skin first thing in the morning, when the increased blood flow will help wake you up, or before you take a shower.

Skin brushing can easily be incorporated into a daily routine. It just takes a few minutes of your time in the morning before your shower or bath and the health benefits are tremendous!

Use a soft, natural bristle brush, start at your feet and sweep up the legs in long, light brisk movements. All skin brushing movements should be towards the heart, to encourage the return of blood and encourage lymphatic flow. Brush from your fingertips up to your shoulders and toward the heart.

Use small strokes and gentle pressure. Avoid your face and areas of skin irritation. Pay particular attention to the cellulite-prone areas like your thighs. Brush your abdomen with a circular clock-wise motion.

All in all skin brushing should take about three minutes, depending on how many strokes you give each spot. Don’t be too rough. Over-brushing causes the skin to turn red and become irritated.

Make sure you wash your brush every few weeks in water and let it dry before using it again.
