What are parabens and why should we avoid them?
Whilst some forms of paraben can be found in nature, those that are used in cosmetics are synthetic preservatives and can be found in everything from shampoo, to moisturiser, to make-up.
Some parabens have been shown to have weak oestrogenic activity in test-tube studies, and some scientists have expressed concerns over whether repeated exposure could potentially affect hormone levels.
Their use is restricted in several countries and Denmark has banned two specific parabens in products intended for use on children under three years old.
Common parabens include methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben.
Research published in 2020 has revealed that the use of parabens in pregnancy may have consequences for the child’s chances of developing childhood obesity. The researchers believe that parabens may modify the action of genes that interfere with feelings of hunger in the brain.
Due to the rise in popularity of paraben-free products, more and more brands are starting to launch products that have replaced parabens with other preservatives.
This may seem like a positive step by the industry but it can sometimes be misleading and cause confusion for the public. The way these paraben-free cosmetics are often marketed is to portray them as a natural alternative, when in fact they often contain other chemical nasties that may be damaging to the skin. One tactic is to remove parabens and replace them with other synthetic preservatives, leaving the rest of the formula relatively untouched. This is commonly known as ‘greenwashing’.
Those wishing to switch to a more natural hair care regime may wish to avoid products containing parabens. Don’t be fooled by brands who label certain products as ‘paraben-free’. Just because it doesn’t contain parabens, it doesn’t mean the products is natural.
Green People’s range of natural and organic paraben-free shampoos and conditioners are also free from SLS, petrochemicals and other harsh synthetic ingredients.
Paraben free make-up & cosmetics
The average woman often uses upwards of five or even ten different make-up products on our faces every single day. Mainstream foundations, blushers, mascaras, concealers and many more staple cosmetics all contain parabens. Even many of the high end department store brands use these cheap synthetic preservatives.
Because make-up is left on the face all day, it makes sense to prioritise choosing paraben-free make-up over a rinse-off product which is only briefly in contact with your skin.
Containing natural Earth Minerals and non-pore-clogging ingredients, Green People’s natural make-up is paraben-free and suitable for all skin types, even the most sensitive.
