Can self tan lotion cause a skin reaction?

A very small proportion of the population - estimated at around 1 in 10,000 - have a sensitivity or allergy to the active ingredient (Dihydroxyacetone or DHA) used in the vast majority of self-tanning lotions. Therefore, any product containing this ingredient will cause the same symptoms, no matter how natural the rest of the ingredients are.

It's important to realise that people are not reacting to DHA because it is a nasty, synthetic ingredient. It is derived from a natural enzyme breakdown of sugars and glycerin and is generally very well tolerated.

However, many people who have reactions to high street brands of self tan lotion are sensitive to artificial fragrances or other ingredients, rather than DHA.

Award-winning natural self tanning lotions

Green People self tan lotions are made with a gentle, organic formula and natural essential oils.

Many people find that they can use our self tan lotions when other brands have caused a reaction, although they will not be suitable for those with an allergy to DHA.
