vegan beauty tips for veganuary

If you’re taking part in Veganuary this year you’re not alone. A staggering 60,000 people stopped eating animal products in January 2017 and, according to data from the Veganuary charity, 66% of them were still following a plant-based diet by June[i]!

Removing animal products from your diet is a key stage in following a vegan lifestyle, but did you know that many beauty products can contain animal derivatives? Here at Green People HQ we strive to ensure that all of our products are vegetarian and as many as possible are suitable for vegans. We never test our products on animals and, so that you know exactly what you are putting on your skin, we clearly mark our range of over 100 vegan products with the Vegan Society logo. Here, we reveal the simple skincare swaps that you can make to ensure that your beauty regime is vegan-friendly this year.

Squalane and Squalene are ingredients that can be found in moisturisers and cleansers due to their outstanding hydrating and moisturising properties. However, while not so common anymore, Squalene can sometimes be derived from shark liver[ii].

For a vegan-friendly alternative try Green People’s Gentle Cleanse & Make Up Remover. Suitable for all skin types, this gentle 2-in-1 cleanser contains plant-based squalane derived from Olives along with nourishing Jojoba esters combined with Shea butter to help remove make-up, including waterproof mascara.

Like cleansers, moisturisers can also contain squalane. To hydrate your skin without harming the environment, opt for a product that contains squalane derived from plants. Green People’s Vita Min Fix-24 Hour Cream is made from squalane that has been extracted from Olive oil. Designed to maintain skin hydration for over eight hours, it also contains the plant active Baicalin which has been clinically proven to reduce the signs of ageing. For best results it is recommended that you combine it with our Fruitful Nights Rejuvenating Night Cream which helps to minimise fine lines and improve skin texture.

According to the animal welfare group PETA, some shampoos can contain animal derivatives such as insect pigment, gelatine and hydrolysed animal proteinii. You won’t find any of these in any of our shampoos. Instead, we’ve harnessed the power of ancient grain Quinoa which contains eight essential amino acids to create a nourishing Quinoa & Artichoke Shampoo that reveals thicker, smoother, more manageable hair. This A-list product even has a celebrity fan base with Hollyoaks actress, Anna Passey describing it as the ‘best shampoo’ she has ever used.

Designed to be creamy in texture, moisturisers and body lotions may sometimes contain milk proteins. To avoid these, look for a lotion that is enriched with natural antioxidants that support the skin and stimulate collagen such Green People’s Quinoa & Calendula Hand & Body Lotion. Free-from drying alcohol, it contains Perilla oil and Marshmallow to help calm irritated, sensitive skin and promote a smooth and even complexion.

If sourcing cruelty-free cosmetics has you breaking out in a sweat, reach for our natural, long-lasting Rosemary & Prebiotics Deodorant. Free-from alcohol and pore-clogging aluminium, it contains Organic Aloe Vera, Prebiotics, Zinc ricinoleate, Lavender and Rosemary.
