No pair of eyes are the same, so choosing the best eyeliner style for your eye shape can make or break your make-up look. Eyeliner is one of the few cosmetic products that can truly change the way you look and with the right application, you can make small eyes appear larger, narrow eyes appear wider and downturned eyes appear more lifted.
We’ve spoken to our resident make-up expert Amy to find out which style of eyeliner best accentuates your eye shape.
EYELINER FOR: ALMOND EYES
Almond-shaped eyes are those that taper gradually, giving an almond-like shape to your eyes. They tend to be very symmetrical and the outer corner, pupil and inner corner all sit on the same horizontal line.
Most styles of eyeliner will work well with this eye shape but to make the most out of your eye shape, start with a very thin line on the inner corner of the upper lid and increase the thickness as you approach the outer corner. We also recommend applying some liner to the outer third of your lower lash line and smudging it with a clean brush, or even your pinkie finger!
EYELINER FOR: SMALL EYES
If you have proportionally small eyes compared to the rest of your facial features, the trick is to not go too heavy as too much eyeliner can make the eyes appear even smaller. Try applying a very fine line along the top upper lid and apply Volumising Mascara to just your top lashes. We would also recommend dabbing a tiny bit of Illuminating Eye Duo to the inner corner of each eye to brighten up the eye area.
EYELINER FOR: BIG EYES
Big-eyed beauties can get away with lots of different eyeliner styles but a popular trend is a sultry smoky eye. To start, line all around the eye and use a clean brush to soften and smudge the line. Once you have achieved your desired amount of smokiness, apply some more eyeliner to the upper and lower waterline for a more dramatic look.
EYELINER FOR: HOODED EYES
To emphasize where the upper lid droops or hangs over the natural crease of the eye, apply plenty of eyeliner to the upper lash line and add lots of mascara to top and bottom lashes to give the illusion of more wide-awake eyes. A bit of Illuminating Eye Duo dabbed onto the centre of the upper lid and inner corner of the eye will also help brighten the area.
EYELINER FOR: ROUND EYES
If you can see the whites of your eyeball under your iris when you look straight ahead and can see a prominent curve of your eyeball under your eye, you have round eyes. Create the illusion of wider eyes by lining the outer upper and lower lash line. Use a clean eyeshadow brush to blend outwards and soften the line. This will contour the eye and create a soft almond shape.
EYELINER FOR: DEEP SET EYES
Deep set eyes are set further back in the socket which means they can be overshadowed by the brow bone. To bring out the best of deep set eyes, trace a fine line around the entire edge of your eye. You can also apply the liner to the inner waterline for a more dramatic effect.
EYELINER FOR: CLOSE SET EYES
If you have a small space between your eyes then you will need to focus on the outer corners of your eyes only for best results. We recommend starting from the middle of your upper and lower lid and working your way to the outer corner, using a clean brush to soften the line and create the illusion of a wider eye with a tapered wing.
EYELINER FOR: WIDE SET EYES
The worst thing those with wide set eyes can do with their eyeliner is to create a cat flick or winged style. This style emphasizes the outer corner and will make the eyes look even wider. Instead, draw attention to the inner corners and opt for a softer style and use a sharpened pencil to apply your eyeliner to the inner corners of both lids, before softly blending your eyeliner towards the corners of the eye.
EYELINER FOR: DOWNTURNED EYES
A downturned eye is similar to an almond shape but the outer corners tend to droop down. To emphasize this eye shape and give a more lifted appearance to the outer corners, we recommend “faking a lift” and applying a wing to the upper lid and using a clean brush to blend it across the outer third of the upper eye lid.
EYELINER FOR: MONOLIDS
Monolid eyes look great with an extra thick layer of eyeliner. Start at the inner corner and increase the thickness of your line as you cross the eyelid towards the outer corner. Big is beautiful so don’t be afraid to go bold with this eyeliner style!
