Keeping up your exercise routine through the winter months can be anything but easy. Short days, dark evenings and unfavourable weather can leave you feeling demotivated and reaching for the remote.
If you do manage to get yourself up off the sofa and out the door, the conditions you face can leave your skin dry, damaged and in need of some TLC.
Here, we share our top tips for looking after your skin while exercising in winter.
PROTECT YOUR FACE
In really cold conditions it can be tempting to reach for a tub of petroleum jelly to protect the skin on your face from the damaging effects of wind-chill. As a by-product of the oil industry, petroleum jelly is not compatible with our skin. Slathering it on your face and lips will prevent the skin from breathing, potentially making the area even more sore and chapped.
For a protective skin barrier that won’t prevent breathing, try swapping for our Soothing Baby Salve, this natural salve contains Beeswax which acts as a protective, breathable layer on the skin’s surface to help lock in moisture.
To protect the sensitive skin on and around your lips try our Enrich & Enhance Lip Primer, this lip balm contains Carnauba and Beeswax to keep your lips ultra-soft and protected.
WRAP UP WARM
It’s a no-brainer that if it’s cold outside you need some extra layers. However warm you think you might get whilst exercising it’s always better to wear too much, than too little.
Choosing breathable, lightweight materials, worn over a thermal base layer, will keep you warm whilst giving you the option to remove something if you heat up. Remember, as soon as you stop exercising the sweat you have produced will evaporate and your temperature will quickly drop, making the walk home miserable.
Gloves are essential for looking after your hands whilst exercising outdoors in winter and will help protect your skin from the drying conditions. Opting for breathable, moisture-wicking gloves will ensure that even if your hands do sweat, they will never become damp.
CARRY EXTRA SOCKS
There is nothing worse than having wet feet, and when your foot hits that puddle 10 minutes into your 60-minute run it can seriously damage your motivation. On long runs, or in wet conditions, carry a spare pair of socks as backup. Yes, the added weight might mean you miss that personal best, but your feet will thank you later when you ward off potential fungi infections.
DON’T FORGET THE SPF
You might think that UV damage is a concern you can strike off the list in winter, but did you know that that up to 80% of UVA rays can penetrate through clouds? While your skin may not burn on a sunny winter day, it can still experience sun damage. UVB rays that cause burning are mostly blocked by clouds. However UVA rays, that cause premature ageing and skin damage, are able to pass through, so it’s important to apply an SPF cream before you head out for your winter workout. Try our Day Solution SPF15 Moisturiser or Scent Free Facial Sun Cream SPF30 to ensure you have adequate protection from all the forces.
DON’T JUMP STRAIGHT IN THE SHOWER
The temptation to run through the door and jump straight into a scorching hot shower can be overwhelming. It’s important to let your body slowly return to its normal temperature as extreme changes in temperature can cause damage to your skin including extreme dryness, cracking and chilblains.
After you’ve enjoyed that well-earned shower, remember to rehydrate your skin with a nourishing moisturiser. For an all over body moisturiser, opt for our Nurture Body Lotion. This luxury, natural moisturiser is enriched with Squalane from olive and Jojoba esters to help rehydrate and rebalance dry skin.
Because the skin on your hands doesn't produce as much natural oil as the rest of your body, this area is much more prone to dryness, especially in colder weather. Treat yourself to our Damask Rose Hand Cream for a non-greasy, intensely nourishing moisture boost.
