Was Witch Hazel your teenage skin care staple? Here we go back to school and deliver a masterclass on how Witch Hazel can help you to battle adult blemishes.
WHAT ARE THE SKIN CARE BENEFITS OF WITCH HAZEL?
You might associate Witch Hazel products with your school days, but this natural ingredient is a powerful weapon in the fight against adult acne. It’s created by distilling the twigs and leaves of the Witch Hazel tree and when used in skin care, it helps to refine pores, control excess oil and prevent blemishes.
A tried-and-tested spot care solution, Witch Hazel’s reputation as an effective, natural spot-zapper has ensured it is commonly used as a natural skin toner and has even been recognised as one of the top skin care trends of 2019. According to the social media site Pinterest, searches for Witch Hazel increased by a staggering 305% last year as clean-beauty advocates sought out more natural ways to care for spot-prone skin.
With its natural ability to help refine pores and control excess sebum, Witch Hazel is one of the best natural ingredients for spotty skin. However, whilst its reputation as an effective spot-clearer is well established, few people realise that the ingredient is naturally astringent and may not be suitable for all skin types.
HOW TO USE WITCH HAZEL SKIN CARE ON OILY OR SPOT-PRONE SKIN
Witch Hazel is ideal for oily and spot-prone skin types. Oily skin will typically have hyperactive sebaceous glands which produce excess amounts of sebum, a natural oil that attracts acne bacteria to the skin.
Using a Witch Hazel face wash will help the skin to regulate the amount of sebum that is produced but, because Witch Hazel is naturally astringent, it is extremely important you do not use a cleanser that contains skin-drying ingredients such as alcohol or SLS.
This is because applying astringent skin care to the skin too liberally and too often may strip away the skin’s natural oils and to counteract this, the skin will produce more oil.

IS WITCH HAZEL SKIN CARE RIGHT FOR SENSITIVE, SPOT-PRONE SKIN?
If you have sensitive skin, Rosacea, or your skin reacts to even the most natural of ingredients, great care must be taken when applying skin care with Witch Hazel.
Often mistaken for ‘adult acne’, Rosacea can leave the skin feeling dry and irritated and may cause red spots and pustules to appear. Because many acne skin care products contain powerful ingredients that can irritate the skin, treating Rosacea as acne can do more harm than good.
A better way to calm and clear spot-prone sensitive skin is to cleanse the face with our Scent Free Cleanser & Make-Up Remover which is especially designed to clean and care for delicate skin. Once the skin is clean, apply our Scent Free Light Day Moisturiser. Ultra-gentle and made without skin-irritating fragrance, it contains Prebiotics to restore a healthy skin balance and Willow Bark, an anti-inflammatory which is rich in Salicin and helps control acne breakouts.
HOW TO USE WITCH HAZEL AS A TONER
With its natural ability to refine pores and balance sebum production, Witch Hazel is seemingly the ideal toner ingredient but if you’re already using a Witch Hazel based face wash, it’s worth considering whether you need a toner in your skin care regime at all.
Applying neat Witch Hazel or a toner with Witch Hazel to the skin will help remove excess dirt and oil, but this can be also be achieved by using a good face wash with Witch Hazel. If your Witch Hazel toner also contains alcohol you might find that it stings and aggravates sensitive skin.
If this happens, using a gentle SLS-free and alcohol-free face wash that contains Witch Hazel, like Green People’s Foaming Face Wash, might be better for your skin.
