You may switch to richer skin care in winter, but do you consider the seasonal needs of your hair? Winter weather brings a whole host of hair-damaging factors. The freezing temperatures, central heating and lack of humidity all contribute to making your hair feel dry, look dull and prone to breakage.
It’s time to change up your hair care routine and styling techniques to inject some much needed moisture and vitality into parched winter locks.

1. Use an SLS-free shampoo
Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. Shampoo that contains sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) can strip your scalp of its natural, healthy oils and put your skin out of balance. This can cause dryness, flaking and irritation, which in-turn often translates to hair that looks lifeless and in need of some serious TLC.
By using an organic, SLS-free shampoo that is pH-balanced, you won’t strip your skin of beneficial oils, keeping your scalp moisturised and healthy.

2. Wash with warm water, not hot
While a super-hot shower may feel great on a cold morning, it won’t do your hair (or skin) any favours. The heat from the water can be very drying and may cause an itchy, flaky scalp as the extreme change in temperature throws your skin out of its natural balance.
3. Style with care
We all know how damaging hairdryers, straighteners and curling tongs can be for our hair, but it can be tough to forego heated styling tools on chilly winter mornings. Nobody enjoys stepping into the freezing outdoors with wet hair.
Rushed morning routines leave little time for air-drying your hair, so try using a micro-fibre towel (much gentler than a normal towel) to remove excess water, before using the coolest setting of your hairdryer. Make sure you hold the dryer at least 30cm away from your hair to minimise heat damage.
4. Apply a restorative hair treatment
Sometimes using shampoo and conditioner alone isn’t enough to tame unruly winter hair. For those times when your normal hair care routine isn’t delivering the results you want, a restorative hair mask can make all the difference.

5. Get regular trims
Our hair tends to be drier in the winter months, making it more prone to split ends than in the spring or summer. Whether your hair is long, short, straight or curly, regularly cutting your hair helps to keep it looking healthy and reduces the risk of split ends.
Once you have split ends they cannot be repaired (despite many products promising to do so) so giving them the chop is the only way to get rid of them. When left un-trimmed, split ends can travel up the hair shaft and weaken your hair, this leads to hair that looks dull and frizzy.
