ARE WATER RESISTANT ‘ONCE A DAY’ SUNSCREENS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?
Do you rely on a ‘once a day’ sun lotion for you and your family? New research by Which? warns that you might not be getting the protection you expect.
According to the consumer watchdogs, as many as 70% of us either use or are interested in using once-a-day sun creams [i]. Whilst many of these products also claim to be water resistant and offer high levels of protection with just one single application, a 2018 investigation by Which? has revealed that the SPF factor of such sun lotions can drop by as much as 59% after 40 minutes exposure to salt water [ii].
According to news reports, Which? has questioned the accuracy of current manufacturing guidelines by saying that their research suggests water resistant sunscreens don’t live up to their claims when subjected to rigorous testing. In response to the research they have urged sunscreen manufactures to reconsider describing their products as ‘once-a-day’ or ‘water resistant’ so that they do not confuse or mislead consumers.
