How well do you understand the skin ageing process? Here we explore the science of ageing and show you how to build a skin-reparative routine with the products in the Age Defy+ by Cha Vøhtz range.

WHAT CAUSES SKIN AGEING?

EXTRINSIC AGEING: LIFESTYLE & ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

The greatest influence of extrinsic ageing is UV damage from sunlight, but lifestyle elements such as diet, excessive alcohol intake, smoking, stress and air pollution, will also contribute to premature ageing.

The good news is that you can significantly minimise the impact of extrinsic ageing by modifying your lifestyle.

It’s never too late to start:

  • Wearing sun protection daily, even on an overcast day
  • Staying hydrated and restricting your alcohol intake
  • Wearing antioxidant-rich skin care to defend the skin against free-radicals
  • Eating a healthy diet rich in antioxidants and essential omega fatty acids

Don’t forget to make time for yourself too.  No matter how busy you are, taking a little time to do something you enjoy, or just adding a period of quiet time in the middle of your daily routine will help you to unwind and reflect.

Try meditation, a walk in the fresh air, that gym class you’ve been meaning to get to - anything that you would love to do but don’t feel you have time for. Prioritising ‘you time’ will not only make you happier and reduce stress, but it will probably make you more efficient with your daily routine too.

INTRINSIC AGEING: DECLINING CELL RENEWAL RATE

Intrinsic ageing comes from within and is determined by your genetic make-up which occurs naturally and is affected by the degenerative effects of free radicals, hormonal changes and your body’s inability to repair skin damagei.

During our lifetime our skin cell renewal rate slows down, from 24-30 days in your 20’s to 45-90 days from your 50’s. With slow cell renewal dead cells cling to the skin surface making it harder for the skin to retain hydration, resulting in a dry and dull complexion, with wrinkles appearing more pronounced.

You can support your skin by:

  • Exfoliating with a gentle scrub twice a week
  • Hydrating your skin morning and evening with a serum and moisturiser
  • Locking in hydration by following your moisturiser with a facial oil
  • Taking a beauty supplement to boost your skin’s health from within

INTRINSIC AGEING: COLLAGEN COLLAPSE & DNA DAMAGE

During your thirties and forties, the skin will start to lose elasticity and its supply of collagen so skin sagging will be more visible. At this stage our bodies will have also long-stopped producing Telomerase, a remarkable enzyme that repairs DNA strands damaged during cell renewal. Without this, any skin-ageing DNA incurred through cell renewal becomes permanent, so the cells divide less frequently, and the skin appears dull and aged.

From age 35 onwards you can help your skin by:

  • Supporting the collagen content of your skin with collagen-boosting skin care
  • Choosing a brightening moisturiser to address pigmentation (age spots)

IS SKIN AGEING INEVITABLE?

Because intrinsic ageing is governed by your genetic make-up, you may think this aspect of skin ageing has to be inevitable. We asked Charlotte Vøhtz how those concerned about genetic premature ageing can be proactive against wrinkles:

“Genetics can play a significant role in skin changes, but it is important to note that the first signs of ageing are usually the result of UVA radiation - not your DNA.

UVA radiation causes formation of free radicals - highly reactive oxygen molecules that can damage your DNA and lead to premature ageing.

Apart from enriching your diet with antioxidant-rich, brightly coloured fruits and vegetables, protecting your skin from UVA rays by applying sun cream or a facial moisturiser with SPF, the answer to free radical damage is skin care products rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory key actives.

The products in the Age Defy+ by Cha Vøhtz range are specifically formulated with high amounts of antioxidants to help defend your skin from UVA damage. Our Cell Enrich Facial Oil includes antioxidant-rich Perilla and Blackcurrant Seed Oil and our skin care supplement Green Beauty is rich in Astaxanthin, an antioxidant powerhouse, which is easy to incorporate into your daily routine.”
