19 planet-friendly beauty tips

Could you make more eco-conscious cosmetic choices? At Green People, caring for the environment is extremely important to us so we’ve pooled some planet-friendly beauty tips from our team to help you create a greener skin care routine.

  1. Streamline your skin care

Applying too many skin care products not only risks congesting your pores but it also means that all those empty bottles will soon pile up in your recycling box.

A great way to streamline your skin care collection is by using a 24-hour skin cream. Designed to be used day and night, these keep skin fresh and healthy without the need for too many products.

  1. Choose products with purpose

Buying skin care purchases that support an environmental charity or that contribute to cutting carbon emissions is another great way to keep your skin care routine planet friendly.

Donations raised from the sale of our full-size Scent Free Sun Creams support the Marine Conservation Society and these trustworthy organic sun creams are packaged in sugar cane plastic, a material which is made using sugar cane crops that are carbon negative.

3. Bulk buy

Bulk buying might seem wasteful but, so long as you only buy what you will use, it can actually help you to keep deliveries to a minimum.

Consolidating orders into fewer deliveries not only reduces the need for packaging waste but also means that fewer emissions are generated in transporting your products.

4. Concentrate

Many beauty products have a high percentage of water in them. This means that you often need to use quite a bit of product to enjoy its benefits.

Our concentrated formulas ensure that you only need a little amount of product at a time. That means that you can use less and waste less.

  1. Say hello to hybrid

Hybrid cosmetics, such as our Age Defy+ Tinted DD Moisturisers SPF15, should be part of every planet-friendly skin care routine.

Multifunctional make-up products, our tinted moisturisers give a soft and even skin coverage and are so hydrating that, unless your skin is very dry, there’s no need to apply any other moisturising product. They even offer SPF protection, meaning there no need to spend out on extra facial sun cream.

  1. Opt for organic

Certified organic skin care products must feature a high percentage of ingredients that are farmed and harvested in a sustainable way that protects the health of the soil for future generation.

While they may cost a little more, you can be assured that by buying certified organic beauty products, you are making a planet-friendly skin care choice.

  1. Choose by-product ingredients

Some of our products use by-product ingredients in either their formulations or in their packaging, Repurposing these ingredients helps to reduce the amount of waste in the world. Read more about our by-product beauty ingredients.

  1. Shop local

Shopping local can help to cut your carbon footprint and it might surprise you to know that you can find Green People products in shops up and down the UK. Try out our store locator to find your closest stockist.

We even have our own store in Horsham which is the hometown of many of our staff and our founder, Charlotte, is regularly found in store. Find our store location and opening hours here.

  1. Upcycle your empties

Could your empty skin care packaging be used in another way? Our packaging chips are ideal for using in children’s crafts and, once empty and clean, our glass jars can be repurposed and used to store all kinds of household items.

  1. Raise the bar

Soap bars and shampoo bars are popular zero-waste products and can help you to keep your hair and body clean without adding to our planet’s pollution problem.

Some skin care and shampoo bars feature actives known to agitate sensitive skin so, if you are prone to skin irritation, make sure your cleansing bar is suitable for sensitive skin before you use it.

  1. Store well

To help skin care products and make-up retain their quality, always store products in a cool cupboard and out of direct sunlight.

Once open, most of our natural beauty products will stay fresh and effective for at least six months.

  1. Skip a bit

Do you really need to wash your hair every day or could you go a day or two between washes? Most people find their hair adapts quite easily to washing 2-3 times a week.

Washing hair every other day not only means you need to use less shampoo but also shortens the length of your shower so helps to curb water wastage.

  1. Share

Our unisex skin care and personal care products make sharing skin care easy. Not only does this help to keep your bathroom clear of clutter, sharing your products can mean that you use every last drop and produce less waste.

  1. Make your own

Our conditioners can all be used to make a home-made hair mask and our many of our facial oils and serums can be blended together as a nourishing face mask.

If you wish, you can even make a mask using left over fruit and vegetables. Find out how in our guide to making a homemade face mask.

  1. Deplete the heat

Too much exposure to heated hair tools is bad for the hair and harmful to the planet. You can support the health of your hair and reduce your energy use by towel drying or air drying your hair whenever you can.

  1. Buy biodegradable

Biodegradable products make it easy to keep your skin care planet friendly. Biodegradable sheet masks are now readily available and our clever One Balm pot biodegrades after use without leaving any microplastics behind.

  1. Clear out your cleansing pads

Cleansing your skin doesn’t need to generate waste. Instead of using throwaway cleansing pads or wipes, simply splash any excess cleansing foam away from your skin using tepid water.

To keep your use of water low, make your morning cleanse part of your morning shower routine.

Prefer to use a cream cleanser or a cleansing oil?  Use reusable cleansing pads or muslin cloths to remove excess cleanser.

  1. Make your membership meaningful

Our Green Beauty Club helps members can do good deeds through their skin care purchases.

You gain points whenever you shop and these can either be turned into a shopping voucher or donated to a charity such as The Marine Conservation Society, Born Free or The World Land Trust. Find out how to join here – it’s free and simple.

  1. Twist your tubes

Invest in tube-squeezing tools to squeeze every last drop out of toothpastes and squeezy tube skin care products. It’s amazing how much they get out!
