Want to know the best way to banish cellulite? According to new consumer research by the University of Sunderland and the BBC, body brushing with a hard body brush is so effective that people have reported that their cellulite diminished by as much as 26% - beating other popular techniques such as exercise and caffeine creams by over 10%!
Here we reveal what body brushing is, how you do it, and why it is so effective.
What is body brushing?
Also known as dry skin brushing, body brushing involves lightly brushing you skin with a dry brush, made from natural hair bristles, to help remove dead skin cells, improve skin tone and target cellulite.
The technique has been used for hundreds of years and is also thought to help stimulate circulation and kick-start the metabolism.
What are the benefits of body brushing?
There are many health benefits associated with body brushing. Your skin is your largest organ and plays an important role in helping to remove toxins from the body.
For this reason, it is important that the upper layer of the skin (the epidermis) is regularly cleared of dead skin cells which block pores and cause the skin to become congested.
By brushing the body lightly with a dry brush daily you can help your body to;
- Remove dead skin cells and unclog the surface layer
- Encourage new cells to grow
- Stimulate blood and lymphatic circulation within the skin
- And control cellulite by bringing nutrients and oxygen to the upper skin layer
Can body brushing get rid of cellulite?
Cellulite occurs when body fat deposits build up in the skin making it appear dimpled.
Cellulite creams, especially those made with Dihydromyricetin, can help to slow down the body’s ability to both store fat and create new fat cells. However, if the epidermis is congested with dead skin cells, cellulite creams cannot be easily absorbed.
For this reason, it is recommended that before applying a cellulite cream you brush away any dead cells to reveal new cells that are better at absorbing moisture.
How to body brush
BEFORE YOU START: Choose a brush made with natural hair bristles.
WHEN TO BODY BRUSH: The best time of day to body brush is before your morning shower. This is because the technique will help to increase blood flow around the body and help you to wake up.
HOW LONG SHOULD YOU BRUSH FOR? Body brushing for just three minutes each morning will help improve your circulation and encourage the elimination of excess fluid so that your skin stays fresh, healthy and youthful.
BEST PRACTICE: To get the best results from body brushing, start at your feet and sweep up the legs in long, light brisk movements. When brushing your abdomen always use a circular clock-wise motion.
Use small strokes and gentle pressure and to encourage blood and lymphatic flow and always brush from your fingertips up to your shoulders and toward the heart.
Pay particular attention to any areas affected by cellulite but do not brush areas prone to sensitivity or the face.
WHAT TO AVOID: Don’t body brush damaged or irritated skin and take care not to be too rough or to over-brush the skin as this can cause irritation.
FOR BEST RESULTS: Exfoliate at least twice a week after body brushing and finish your shower with a cold rinse to stimulate blood flow.
To help combat cellulite apply our Contour & Sculpt Cellulite Lotion which contains a patented extract from Bayberry, an ingredient known to help boost skin hydration, firmness, elasticity and cell regeneration.
Always wash your brush every few weeks and remember to let it dry before using it again.
