Looking for natural skin care that will help you to fight spots during the perimenopause? In this post we share our recommended routine for restoring balance and radiance to skin that’s experiencing perimenopausal acne.

What causes acne during the perimenopause?

During the perimenopause the level of oestrogen that the body produces declines. This hormone change affects both physical and mental health and can also disturb the balance of the skin.

Itchy, flushed skin are well known perimenopause skin issues but many women also experience perimenopausal acne, especially on and around the chin.

Skin care for perimenopausal acne

Experiencing perimenopausal acne can be very frustrating but by making a few changes to your skin care routine, you can keep your complexion balanced and discourage acne bacteria from entering the skin’s microbiome.

Incorporating anti-blemish products into your perimenopausal skin care routine needn’t mean overhauling your existing beauty regime, nor does it require you to invest in a multi-layer skin care routine that consists of several products.

We suggest keeping your skin care routine simple with a Prebiotic serum and/or moisturiser and using our oil serum drops to give an intense anti-blemish boost to anti-ageing face creams.

Best spot care for perimenopause acne

Part of our founder’s signature Age Defy+ collection, which was designed for women aged 35+, our organic oil serum can be applied neat to spots or mixed with any face cream and was made to help those experiencing spots during the perimenopause to restore balance and radiance to their complexion.

The anti-blemish drops of Age Defy+ Purifying Balancing Oil Serum allow you to personalise your perimenopausal skin care routine to meet your skin’s ever-changing needs. Simply apply a drop neat to spots or blemishes, or mix with your moisturiser to apply to all of your face.

It features Jojoba Oil and Black Cumin Seed Oil, an ingredient that’s known to fight blemishes, clogged pores and inflammation, while Ginger Stem Cells are included for their mattifying properties.

Best cleansing routine for acne during the perimenopause

Double cleansing is another great way to encourage clear pores that are prone to congestion during the perimenopause, and you can keep the skin soft and balanced as you cleanse with our Purify & Hydrate Cream Cleanser.

Enriched with Jojoba, this non-drying cleanser for older skin features firming ingredients that help to enhance elasticity and slow skin sagging.

We also suggest exfoliating the skin twice a week. Exfoliating will not scrub away your spots, but it will help to shed dead cells from the skin. This can help to prevent your skin from becoming congested and makes it easier for the anti-blemish actives in your perimenopausal skin care routine to enter the pores.

We suggest using a gentle face scrub that will not irritate spot-prone perimenopausal skin.

Bamboo Stem is a very gentle exfoliator, and we blend this with exfoliating Pineapple and purifying Bentonite Clay to give our Age Defy+ Soft Buff Skin Exfoliator three-way exfoliation that brightens and refines the skin to leave it feeling fresh and radiant.

Best serum suitable for acne during the menopause

Perimenopausal skin can be particularly prone to trans epidermal water loss, especially at night and when hot flushes strike. An intensely hydrating night mask can help your skin to hold onto hydration but if you’re concerned that heavy, rich moisturisers are contributing to spots during the perimenopause, you may prefer to switch to a light serum.

Serums sink deep into the skin and these silky, hydrating skin care products may feel comforting on skin that is experiencing redness or menopausal flushes. They can also be rich in plant oils that are known to be beneficial for skin that’s experiencing perimenopausal acne.

In 2020 Women and Home published an article called “How to treat menopausal acne at home and the effective products to include in your routine”. Within this they recommended our Age Defy+ by Cha Vøhtz Hydrate & Renew Serum saying,  “To help with spot and sebum control, this anti-aging product contains light oils such as rosehip and pomegranate seed oil” .

Rosehip is a naturally reparative plant oil that is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and spot prone skin. Quickly absorbed by the skin, it is rich in  Omega-3&6 essential fatty acids and can help to soften the appearance of fine lines whilst also helping to prevent perimenopausal acne spots from scaring the complexion.

Our Age Defy+ by Cha Vøhtz Hydrate & Renew Serum also features Green Tea, an anti-inflammatory ingredient that can help to calm spots. Rich in Catechins, Green Tea Extract can also help to prevent spots and blackheads from forming.

Is it perimenopausal acne or rosacea spots?

When we see spots on our skin, we tend to automatically reach for potent skin care products that promise anti-blemish action but, before you start spending out on spot creams for the perimenopause, it is a good idea to be sure that your pimples are being caused by acne.

Rosacea is a skin issue that can affect women of perimenopausal age and one of the symptoms of rosacea is raised bumps on the skin that can look similar to perimenopausal spots. These are usually located on the cheeks.

Skin that is prone to rosacea requires a very gentle skin care approach that uses scent-free products which are non-irritating and made with soothing actives. Our Scent Free 24-Hour Cream is the moisturiser we recommend for skin experiencing perimenopausal redness.

This non-drying moisturiser naturally soothes and protects easily irritated skin. It features soothing Evening Primrose and Squalane to soften and rehydrate skin and is packed with vitamins, minerals and essential nutrients.
