How to protect your skin from stress

We all experience stress in our lives and this can take its toll on our appearance and emotional and physical wellbeing. Many causes of stress can be overcome and there are lots of positive steps you can take to reduce and relieve your stress.

Here we reveal the effects of stress on skin and share our top stress-busters.

Effects of stress on your skin

When we encounter a stressful situation, it can trigger several responses in the body.

According to the NHS stress can raise our heartrate, make us sweat and may cause headaches, muscle pain and a lack of appetitei.

Stress can also affect our circulatory system and our hair, nails and skin. People with chronic stress may notice that their hair and skin look dull. This is because when we are stressed our hormone levels rise and our arteries become narrower, restricting the flow of blood and nutrients around the body.

5 ways stress shows up on your skin

In addition to restricting the amount of blood flow, stress can affect skin in the following ways:

  • Excess sweat
  • Spots and breakouts
  • Itchy skin / Urticaria/ Hives / Nettle rash
  • Eczema flare ups
  • Premature ageing

    Managing stress naturally

It is important to take positive steps to manage your stress and there are several things you can do to help manage stress naturally and improve the state of your mind and your skin.

When stress shows up on your skin it can affect your confidence and cause you further stress. Building a natural skin care kit could help you feel more comfortable in your skin and more in control of your mind, body and situation.
