Morning juices for a healthy start

A healthy juice has lots of nutritional benefits for the body and with the right blend of ingredients, your morning drink could help support your skin, your digestion and your immune systems.

Here we share our favourite morning juices and drinks for a healthy start to the day.

 

Wake up to lemon water

A good way to stimulate your body for the day ahead is to squeeze some lemon into a glass of water. This caffeine-free morning drink delivers a zesty awakening taste and is a refreshing and easy way to get one of the 6-8 recommended glasses of water a day.

We add lemon to our morning glass of water because it is rich in vitamin C which is an essential vitamin for a healthy immune system.

Drinking a glass of lemon water results in a rise in alkalinity in the body which has a balancing action and prepares the body for the rigors and stresses of the day ahead. It is also thought to kickstart the metabolism so that the nutritious foods you eat throughout the day are more easily digested and their nutrients better absorbed by the body.

To make this drink, dilute the juice of one lemon in 9 parts water and aim to drink it around 15-20 minutes before your first meal of the day.

WINTER WARMER: If you prefer to start your day with a warm drink you can add slices of lemon to a cup of warm water. You can also mix in a spoonful of honey to make a soothing honey and lemon drink.

Boost with juice

Juicing fruits and vegetables that are rich in immune-supporting benefits is a great way to support your body’s nutritional needs and is a healthy way to naturally energise the body. One glass of fresh juice also counts towards your recommended 5-a-day foods.

The juicing process depletes some of the fibre content of raw ingredients and this makes it easier for the body to absorb their nutrients. However, this process also releases natural sugars from the  ingredients and for this reason, the NHS advises that you should limit the quantity of juice you drink to just 150ml daily[i].

Fruit juice is naturally sweet and can be very acidic so it is a good idea to make your morning juice with a mix of fruits and alkaline vegetables. The body needs a diet that is neither too acidic or too alkaline to function at its best. Consuming too many acidic foods could affect the performance of the immune system and make it is harder for the body to absorb minerals and nutrients

Both adults and children can benefit from a freshly made juice. The nutrition and immune-supporting benefits that you get from your juice will depend on the ingredients you use but you can be sure that a juice made with lots of fresh, natural water-rich vegetables will hydrate the body and deliver a nutritious mix of vitamins and minerals.

Feel-good greens

Green, leafy vegetables are rich in calcium and iron, are often alkaline and offer an abundance of nutritional benefits, including immune support. Overcooking greens such as spinach could deplete them of their some of their nutrients, but you can maximise their nutrient values by making a green smoothie. Our favourite feel good green smoothie recipe is to blend the contents of two capsules with a de-seeded pear, half a cucumber and two handfuls of spinach. Add an inch of peeled fresh ginger and a squeeze of half a lemon and you’ll have a delicious, nutritious morning drink.

Morning shots of immune support

Another way you can support your immune system is with a daily shot of Echinacea. The Echinacea plant is the subject of many clinical trials that look at helping the body to ward off viruses such as the common cold.
