The rise of vegan beauty

The rise of vegan beauty

Sales of vegan and cruelty-free beauty are on the rise as conscientious consumers increasingly switch to vegan moisturisers, skin care and make-up. Thinking of going vegan? Read on to discover everything you need to know about vegan beauty.

WHY ARE PEOPLE SWITCHING TO VEGAN BEAUTY PRODUCTS?

Veganisms popularity can, in part, be attributed to the rise of Veganuary. Motivated by health, environment and animal welfare concerns, thousands pledge to start the new year following a vegan lifestyle. For many, the Veganuary experience is so positive that they either switch to a vegan lifestyle or curb their use of non-vegan products.

Animal welfare charities such as Peta and Cruelty Free International have also hugely influenced our increasing interest in vegan beauty. These charities campaigned for many years to bring about the ban on animal testing in Europe and continue to fight worldwide to end animal exploitation.

HOW CAN YOU FIND OUT IF A BEAUTY PRODUCT IS VEGAN?

There are two ways to determine whether a product is suitable for vegans or not. The first is to check the product for the Vegan Society logo. This is attributed to all products approved by the Vegan society and is clearly marked on Green People’s range of vegan skin care.

The second way is to read the list of ingredients on the product’s label. To help you identify non-vegan ingredients Peta has list of animal-derived ingredients on their website https://www.peta.org/living/food/animal-ingredients-list/. There are also several apps available that can help you to detect non-vegan ingredients.

ARE ALL VEGAN BEAUTY PRODUCTS CRUELTY-FREE?

Whilst you might think all vegan products are cruelty free, brands that test on animals can claim that their products are suitable for vegans.

A product that does not contain any ingredients derived from animals can be classified vegan. However, if the product is sold in a country where animal testing is required by law (as is common in China) the product will not be cruelty-free.

TWO WAYS TO GIVE YOUR BEAUTY REGIME A VEGAN MAKE-OVER

DON’T BE BLINDSIDED BY BUNNIES:

When shopping for cruelty-free beauty products it’s important that you look beyond the bunny and carefully check the cruelty-free credentials of your product.

Whilst some UK brands will carry a PETA or Leaping bunny logo, affirming their cruelty free status, other cruelty-free brands may choose not to mark their products with either logo. Likewise, some brands may claim to be cruelty-free, but may sell internationally in China where animal testing is obligatory to brands that manufacture outside of China and import in for the retail market.

If you’re not sure a brand is cruelty-free the best thing to do is contact them to check their cruelty-free status. Over 90% of Green People products are Vegan Society approved and ALL our products are accredited with the PETA cruelty-free logo, we also do not test any product or ingredient on animals and we have never sold or manufactured in China.

BEWARE OF BEETLES:

Love red lipstick? Bold reds can brighten up our lips but care should be taken to check that they don’t contain carmine. This pigment is often used in red cosmetics and is made by crushing thousands of cochineal beetles. For a natural alternative opt for lipsticks made with natural earth mineral pigments.
