The toxic cosmetic ingredients to watch out for

With the average woman using a staggering number of different chemicals on her skin every single day, it’s no wonder we lose track of the confusing and potentially harmful web of cosmetic ingredients found lurking in our make-up bags.

We find it shocking that some products can contain 100's of hidden components listed under the blanket term ‘parfum’ or ‘fragrance’ on the label. We believe that you deserve to know what’s in your make-up and to trust that any ingredients used are effective, beneficial and gentle on even the most sensitive skin.

We’re giving you an insight into some of the most popular make-up items used by women, so you can make informed decisions about your make-up staples.

What could you find in your foundation?

Foundation is a product that many women use every single day and is applied all over the face and neck. Therefore it is extremely important that the foundation you use is non-drying for the skin and without any potentially harmful chemicals that could penetrate the skin’s outer layer and be transported into the bloodstream.

Some foundations can harbor as many as 24 different chemical cosmetic ingredients, amongst them polymethyl methacrylate, which adds a soft, smooth feel but worryingly some studies have reportedly linked this ingredient to skin allergies and even the disruption of the immune system.

Our Pressed Mineral Powder foundations are free from polymethyl methacrylate and are 100% natural and made with Earth Minerals and Beeswax for a flawless, long-lasting and lightweight finish.

Made without irritating talc or mineral oils (derived from crude oil) that are found in many high street foundations, these unique formulas contain SPF15 protection and are very gentle on sensitive skin. Our pressed powders never clog pores so skin is able to breathe and maintain a healthy, natural balance.

Can mascara do damage to lashes?

If someone told you to paint the fragile ends of your hair with mascara, you’d tell them they were crazy!

We all know how delicate our hair can be and how important it is to nourish and protect the brittle ends, but we seem to have forgotten that our lashes are made of the same stuff.

Mascaras from well-known high street brands often contain a whole host of damaging chemicals that can actually cause lashes to become dry, brittle and even fall out - then you end up adding more product to make your lashes look thicker, which then causes even more damage.

One chemical nasty found in mainstream mascaras is drying alcohol. Used as a preservative and to make mascaras quick to dry on the eyes, alcohol saps lashes of their natural protective oils and can cause them to become dehydrated and brittle.

Our certified organic Volumising Mascaras are packed with nourishing natural plant oils like Sunflower oil, as well as organic Beeswax for water resistance and longevity.

These natural mascaras promote stronger, healthy lashes with intense colour that lasts all day without smudging. They are also suitable for people with sensitive eyes. Read more about mascara for sensitive eyes.

Ingredients found in eyeshadow

The skin around our eyes is one of the most delicate and sensitive areas on our bodies. Many people who don’t usually experience sensitive skin are still prone to flare ups and dryness around this problem area.

Because the skin is so thin around the eyelids, it's important that whatever products we apply to this area are gentle, nourishing and free from any potentially irritating chemicals.

Many high street eyeshadows contain petrochemicals, often in the form of silicones and mineral oils which are all derived from crude oil. Petrochemicals have little or no affinity to our skin and using them is like wrapping your skin in cling film, preventing it from breathing which could lead to irritation and dryness.

For an effective, natural alternative that’s free from petrochemicals, try our range of organic eyeshadows.

These duos are made with highly pigmented minerals for a dramatic, buildable effect and also contain our signature make-up ingredient - organic Beeswax, for a crease-free finish.

Our eyeshadow palettes come in a range of gorgeous neutral shades including our Illuminating Eye Duo, which wakes up tired eyes for a seamless day to night transition.
