Do you know how to get the most out of your face cream? Here we explain how to moisturise your face and neck using the correct techniques and products.

Why use moisturiser?

To keep the face and neck hydrated it’s important to apply moisturiser every day. Doing so will seal hydration into the skin and will also deliver a wealth of nutrients and anti-ageing benefits.

Your skin will tell you when it needs hydrating and it will feel dry and tight when it is low on moisture. Whilst you might be tempted to slather rich facial creams onto dry skin, doing so could cause more harm than good.

Thick layers of moisturiser can clog pores and if your moisturiser contains synthetic ingredients, applying too much could trigger irritation and may even risk an influx of toxins entering the bloodstream through the skin.

At Green People we believe in minimising your exposure to harmful toxins and make our non-toxic moisturisers using clinically proven plant actives that nourish and support the skin.

Minimising wastage is also an important part of our ethos and great care is taken when formulating our moisturisers to use the part of the plant that has an active effect of the skin. By doing so we ensure that you only need to apply a small amount of moisturiser to feel the benefits; less is more.

How to apply moisturiser to your face

A lot of people rub moisturisers into the skin but a better technique it to tap a small amount of moisturiser into the face and neck using light upward movements. Tapping the moisturiser into the skin will help it to absorb and can also boost circulation and increase the flow of nutrients around the body.

Your skin should soak up face creams but if your skin surface is clogged with dead skin cells you may find that your moisturiser sits on the skin surface and won’t absorb easily. To remove the dead cells, you should exfoliate the skin surface twice weekly. For guidance on choosing the right face scrub for your skin, read our guide to exfoliating the skin.

Our natural and organic moisturisers nourish the skin with pure plant extracts and oils. Discover our best-sellers:

When to apply moisturiser

Regardless of your skin type you should moisturise your skin every morning and every evening. It is best to apply your moisturiser to clean skin and ideally you should put your moisturiser on whilst the skin is still slightly damp.

This is because a good quality moisturiser will contain humectants which absorb water from the surrounding environment and bind it to the skin.

Applying your moisturiser to damp skin will give this access to a good supply of water that can be locked into the skin.

Applying your moisturiser in the morning will help protect your skin from the onslaught of UV light, blue light, dirt, pollution and bacteria it faces throughout the day.

To make sure your skin is adequately protected against these, opt for skin care containing SPF and antioxidant ingredients like Seaweed, Green Tea and Rosemary. Our Day Solution SPF15 Moisturiser combines safe, non-toxic UV protection with Rosemary and Green Tea and is the ideal anti-pollution day moisturiser.

Our skin’s behaviour changes at night and whilst you sleep it works hard to repair and rehydrate itself. To do this the skin needs to ‘breathe’ so it is important to thoroughly cleanse your face before you go to sleep and that you do not clog the surface by applying too much night cream to the skin.

Instead, lightly tap a light night cream or facial oil into the skin. This repair process requires a multitude of nourishing vitamins and minerals so all Green People night creams are densely packed with nutrients that work overnight to allow your skin to remove waste, replenish lost nutrients and repair damage caused during the day.

How to apply eye cream

The skin around the eyes is thinner than the skin on the rest of the face and because it also has fewer oil glands, it finds it hard to retain moisture. To keep the skin around the eyes well-hydrated apply a nourishing eye cream twice daily to the entire eye contour area, using light tapping motions.

In addition to helping the eye cream to sink into the skin, a tapping motion will boost circulation to the skin and help drain away the excess fluid that can create dark, puffy circles around the eyes. You don’t need to wash off your eye cream, simply leave it to sink into the skin before applying your moisturiser.

Facial yoga can also help stimulate circulation to the eye area. Discover our tips for practising facial yoga.

How to moisturise your neck

As we age, the skin around the neckline loses its structure and starts to sag. Regularly exposing the décolletage to sunlight will exacerbate this process but applying anti-ageing moisturisers and SPF sun care can help keep the skin soft and supple.

To moisturise the neck, apply your anti-ageing face cream to the throat and neck using light tapping motions. If exposing the décolletage, apply a high-factor antioxidant sun lotion to the skin at least 20 minutes before sun exposure.

To keep skin safe in the sun we formulate our sun care with a synergistic blend Green Tea, Edelweiss and Avocado. Rich in antioxidants, Green Tea and Avocado help promote collagen production and Edelweiss has been shown to extend skin cell life.

How to apply tinted moisturiser

Our Tinted DD Moisturisers SPF15 are a light-weight alternative to heavy foundations and are designed to hydrate the skin whilst covering imperfections. Like foundation, they can be applied with your fingers, a sponge or a foundation brush and the way you apply your tinted moisturiser may change depending on the amount of coverage you desire.
