A soothing cup of tea can fix many of life’s problems, but could it help clear congested skin? Here we explore how to use Green Tea for acne.

Can drinking tea help spot-prone skin?

Our skin is made up of millions of cells and these cells need to be hydrated to function effectively. As a cup of tea will contain water it can help to hydrate the skin but, because tea contains caffeine, and caffeine is a diuretic, you will lose a fraction of the water you consume. A better way to keep the skin in balance is to drink the recommended 8 glasses of water a day and to switch your daily brew for a cup of warm lemon water.

Is Green Tea good for acne?

One of the main causes of spots and acne is having over-active sebaceous glands. When these produce too much serum it binds with dead cells on the skin’s surface. Spots and blackheads occur when a build-up of sebum and dead skin cells oxidise in the pore and harden to form a plug. This series of events creates the perfect environment for acne bacteria to thrive and can lead to inflammation and acne

Green Tea is widely thought to play an important role in preventing spots and blackheads from forming. This is because, unlike a tradition British builder’s tea, Green Tea contains powerful antioxidants called Catechins which help protect the skin from oxidative damage. Green Tea is also an anti-inflammatory ingredient so helps to calm red, sore spots and blemishes.

Your 3-step green tea acne regime

Whilst drinking green tea for acne can help to detoxify the body, to target spots and control breakouts it is best to establish a spot-zapping routine using skin care that combines Green Tea with spot-fighting actives like Prebiotics, Tea Tree and Willow Bark.

STEP 1: CLEANSE

Cleanse your face twice a day using our Oy! Foaming Clear Skin Face Wash. Designed for acne-prone skin, this antibacterial formula contains Willow Bark, Witch Hazel, Sage and Tea Tree and thoroughly cleanses the pores whilst helping to control bacteria and inflammation. Always splash your skin with cold water after cleansing as this will help to stimulate your circulation and improve the body’s ability to remove waste products and transport nutrients to the skin.

STEP 2: MOISTURISE

After cleansing, help keep your skin in balance by applying OY! Clear Skin Cleansing Moisturiser. Packed with purifying actives including Willow Bark & Green Tea, this non-greasy formula hydrates the skin whilst promoting a spot-free complexion.

STEP 3: COVER & TREAT

Conceal and heal with Oy! Clear Skin Blemish Concealer, an antibacterial concealer which not only covers blemishes, but banishes them too. A unique blend of natural goodness with Green Tea, Tea Tree and Zinc oxide to fights spots, normalises sebum production and reduces redness and irritation while pineapple enzymes and Bentonite unblock pores and draw out impurities.
