Many people with sensitive skin find that shaving their legs can leave their skin feeling sore or itchy.

In this guide we help you to build a natural body care routine for shaving your legs and armpits without irritating sensitive skin.

Which is the best shaving gel for sensitive skin?

Shaving foams vs shaving gels

There are lots of things to consider when shopping for a shaving product for sensitive skin.

Typically shaving products are available in two formats, shaving foams and shaving gels. Both shaving products are designed to help razors smoothly cut hair close to the skin, but their formulations can differ.

Some shaving products feature the foaming agent SLS and synthetic fragrance. Instead of SLS we make our organic shower gels suitable for sensitive skin by making them with Sodium Coco Sulfate. This is derived from Coconut and is more suitable for those prone to sensitive skin.

Our best gel for shaving sensitive skin is our Scent Free Shower Gel, which is without artificial fragrances or essential oils. It contains Marshmallow Root to help form a protective barrier on the skin’s surface and Aloe Vera to soothe. Its gentle bubbles allow the razor to glide over your skin smoothly.

If you prefer a scented shaving gel and your skin can tolerate essential oils, we’d recommend trying our Soothing Shaving Gel. Although it is officially in our men’s range, it is a unisex product and widely used by both men and women.

How to shave your legs when you have sensitive skin

1. SHOWER

Take your usual shower, leaving shaving your legs or armpits until last. The combination of water and steam will soften coarse hairs and prepare them for shaving. Don’t shave every day as your skin needs time to repair after shaving and shaving sensitive skin too frequently can cause irritation.

2. EXFOLIATE

Gently exfoliate the area you intend to shave with a gentle, natural exfoliator. This removes dead cells that can clog or blunt your razor. It also helps to prevent ingrown hairs.

Our natural face scrubs can be used to prepare legs and arm pits for shaving and are made using natural exfoliators and with Shea Butter, a natural ingredient known for having a high content of Vitamin E.

3. LATHER

Rinse off the scrub and then gently massage Scent Free Shower Gel or Soothing Shaving Gel into the skin until it forms a lather. Applying this will help the razor to slide easily over the skin’s surface and reduces your risk of experiencing a shaving nick or rash.

4. SHAVE

Shave towards the direction that the hair is growing using slow, smooth strokes. Do not shave against the direction of hair growth as this can irritate the skin and cause ingrown hairs to develop.

Frequently shaving over the same area also heightens your risk of irritation so take care to only shave each area once.

5. DRY

Use a soft towel and avoid aggravating newly shaved skin by gently patting the skin dry.

6. MOISTURISE

Shaving your legs removes an outer layer of skin cells which can leave the skin feeling tight and dehydrated. To replenish lost moisture, apply a hydrating moisturiser or a soothing body oil to the skin. Apply it whilst the skin is still slightly damp as this will help to sandwich moisture into the skin.

To reduce the chance of your skin care stinging freshly exposed skin cells we suggest applying alcohol-free body care products. The following body care products are made without fragrance and skin-drying alcohol and are suitable for use on sensitive skin.

Scent Free Hand & Body Lotion

This soothing, scent-free body lotion contains Evening Primrose, a moisture-retaining plant extract. Quickly absorbed, it sinks deep into the skin to restore moisture levels after shaving.

Alexandra Kay Time to Soothe Scent Free Body Oil

This scent-free body oil blends Safflower and Hemp Seed with CB2-Skin™ Biofunctional a patented phyto active that helps to restore calm to easily irritated skin. Derived from premium Patchouli leaf extract, CB2-Skin™ Biofunctional activates CB2 receptors in the skin to help ease irritation from itchy skin.

It locks moisture into the skin to leave it soft, smooth and silky.
