How to shave your legs when you have sensitive skin

When you have sensitive skin, shaving your armpits and legs can be the pits! Here we explore how to shave your legs and armpits without aggravating sensitive skin.

Which is the best shaving gel for sensitive skin?

Shaving foams vs shaving gels

There are lots of things to consider when shopping for a shaving product for sensitive skin.

Typically shaving products are available in two formats, shaving foams and shaving gels. Both shaving products are designed to help razors smoothly cut hair close to the skin, but their formulation can differ vastly.

Shaving foams typically contain alcohol, synthetic fragrances and harsh chemicals such as the foaming agent SLS. This helps make shaving foams feel fluffy and smell appealing but, if you have sensitive skin, this chemical concoction can leave the skin feeling dry, sore and inflamed.

A better shaving product for people with sensitive skin is to apply an SLS-free shaving gel made with natural ingredients.

Our very gentlest shaving gel for sensitive skin is our Scent Free Shower Gel. Made without SLS, artificial fragrances or essential oils, its gentle bubbles allow the razor to glide over your skin smoothly.

How to shave your legs when you have sensitive skin

Take your usual shower, leaving shaving your legs or armpits until last. The combination of water and steam will soften coarse hairs and prepare them for shaving. Don’t shave every day as your skin needs time to repair after shaving and shaving sensitive skin too frequently can cause irritation.

Gently exfoliate the area you intend to shave with a gentle, natural exfoliator. This removes dead cells that can clog or blunt your razor. It also helps to prevent ingrown hairs.

Our scrubs are ideal for preparing legs and arm pits for shaving because they are made with Shea butter, a natural ingredients known for having a high content of the skin-repairing nutrient vitamin E.

Rinse off the scrub and then gently massage Soothing Shaving Gel into the skin until it forms a lather. Applying this will help the razor to slide easily over the skin’s surface and reduces your risk of experiencing a shaving nick or rash.

Shave towards the direction that the hair is growing using slow, smooth strokes. Do not shave against the direction of hair growth as this can irritate the skin and cause ingrown hairs to develop.

Frequently shaving over the same area also heightens your risk of irritation so take care to only shave each area once.

Use a soft towel and avoid aggravating newly shaved skin by gently patting the skin dry.

In addition to removing hair from the body, shaving will remove outer layer of skin cells. This dehydrates the skin so it is important that you moisturise after shaving.

Opt for a moisturiser that contains Evening Primrose as this moisture-retaining plant sinks deep into the skin and helps reduce inflammation.

Avoid moisturisers containing alcohol. Not only will applying this skin-drying ingredient sting but, because newly shaved skin has young cells at the surface, it can be more prone to irritation from alcohol and other chemical ingredients.

Designed for sensitive skin, our soothing Scent Free Body Lotion is free from alcohol and skin -irritating emulsifiers. For best results massage it into the skin using light circular movements.
