Party make-up Q&A with Sophie Darling

How long before a party should you do your make-up?

To guarantee ultimate freshness, leave your make-up as your last step to get glam for your party.

Leave plenty of time so that you don’t feel rushed and then if you make a mistake, you have time to correct it.

How long before a party should you do your make-up?

What are the best products for a natural make-up look for a party?

A lightweight foundation or tinted moisturiser will ensure a dewy glow and my top tip is to use a natural setting powder on areas prone to shine.

Natural eyeshadow shades will help enhance your eyes. Use brown eyeliner, eyeshadow and mascara for a subtle look and opt for black eyeliner and mascara for a more glamour style.

What’s the best way to prime your skin for mineral make-up?

Glowing, long lasting make-up starts with your skin care. Well hydrated skin will ensure radiance shines through your foundation and will help to hold your make-up for longer.

To prep your skin in advance, try blending a few drops of your favourite Green People facial oil with your preferred Green People serum.

If you’re worried about how your make-up will sit on fine lines and wrinkles, try blending Hydrate & Renew Serum with Cell Enrich Facial Oil.

These contain actives that firm and replenish the skin and quickly absorb to create a silky-smooth base to apply mineral make-up to.

What is the best way to set mineral make-up for a party?

Setting make-up with powder will help your make-up last and keep shine at bay for longer and my top tip is to try not to be too heavy handed with powder and make sure any excess is dusted off.

If you love taking photos on your night out, you may want to avoid any setting powders with silica as this can cause flashback in photos!

Powder

Which party make-up products are best for covering spots?

Spots can be a nuisance, whether they are fresh or healing!

If the blemish is fresh, use a cold compress on the targeted area before applying make-up to help reduce any inflammation.

You might also want to use a fast-acting spot serum or an oil serum, such as Age Defy+ Purifying Balancing Oil Serum  on the lead up to your party, to help calm and balance congested areas.

Apply your foundation using clean hands or a clean brush and then press the concealer directly on the spot before using a powder to set.

To help spots on their way, use Oy! Blemish Concealer which is formulated with spot-fighting actives including Green Tea.

A little of this 30ml tube goes a long way and it can also be blended with moisturiser to make a natural foundation or packed into your party bag so that you can top-up your make-up during your night out.

Should you prime your eyelids for eyeshadow?

Primers help to grip eyeshadow to the skin and are great for when using shimmering shades.

Alternatively, using a little bit of concealer on your lids before eyeshadow will ensure an even base.

Eye make up

What are the best natural products for taming brows before a party?

It’s important to balance your eyebrows with the rest of your makeup. If you are going for a smokier eye, use either a fine brow pencil or powder to create definition.

If you are going for a more natural look, use a brow gel, to help tame and enhance shape. Eyebrows are sisters, not twins so try to avoid over filling them with product. Instead, follow the natural brow shape, enhancing slightly in areas if necessary.

To tame fly-away hairs, try smoothing a little One Balm over the brows. The perfect size for your party night handbag, this petite pot of natural balm can also be uses as a lip balm and for caring for your cuticles.

Is there an easy way to achieve a smoky eye make-up style?

The best way to achieve a quick smoky eye look is to use a kohl pencil, such as High Definition Eyeliner which is kind to sensitive eyes and uses vitamin-rich Marula Oil to help you achieve a soft, glide-on.

Gently draw this across the lash line on your eyelids. Then, taking a buffing eyeshadow brush, use a natural brown eyeshadow and buff the product away from the lash line and onto the lid.

My top tip is to make sure you open your eyes occasionally to make sure you don’t go too high with the product.

You can then add either eyeliner or eyeshadow to the lash line at the bottom of your eyes to balance the look.

Should you apply mascara or eyeliner first?

For a kohl, gel or cream eyeliner, I suggest using the eyeliner before mascara to allow close application to the lash line.

If you are using a liquid eyeliner, I recommend using this after the mascara is applied as it can cause excess build up on the lashes.

What is the best way to apply mascara before a party?

Mascara should be your final step to enhancing your eyes and Volumising Mascara’s unique precision brush offers excellent lash definition.

Applying mascara just at the ends of the lashes will create a very natural look, yet if worked from the roots will create a more defined look that can be built up if needed.

Volumising Mascara’s natural cellulose micro spheres give outstanding volume, but you can also use an eyelash curler before you apply to help give an extra lift and create a more dramatic party look.

How can you make your lipstick last longer for a party?

To help party lipstick last longer follow the same rule as your skin. A good base will guarantee a good application!

Gently exfoliate lips and then prime with a lip balm. One Balm is a good choice for helping party lipstick to last longer because it is rich in moisture-retaining actives and contains Beeswax, an ingredient known to anchor lipstick colour to prevent fading or bleeding.

If you are choosing to use a lipstick after this step, you will need to blot before applying lip colour. For a long-lasting look, apply lipstick once, blot with a tissue and then reapply and blot once more to remove any excess.

Do you have a cleansing tip for removing party make-up?

I always double cleanse with a cream cleanser to ensure all makeup is removed. After a night of indulgent party food and drink, your skin may want a little extra TLC to avoid breakouts.

I would usually repeat this step, 1-2 more times to ensure any excess is removed, making sure I use a nourishing serum or moisturiser to finish!
