In many cases, washing with ordinary soap and hot water gives adequate cleansing. However, there are situations where you may benefit from stronger antimicrobial activity - examples are health workers, carers and parents nursing sick children.

The active ingredients in our Antibacterial Hand Wash are natural active extracts from Tea Tree and Manuka - both plants which have been used as antiseptics and antibacterial agents for hundreds of years.

Avoiding antibacterial resistance

Antibacterial resistance is a major challenge for modern day medicine. The main concern over the widespread use of antibacterial products is that they may cause microbial resistance against other antibiotic substances.

With both Tea Tree and Manuka extracts there is clear evidence to show that bacteria do not develop resistance to their action, nor do bacteria develop resistance to other antibiotics. This is marked contrast to the most widely used antibacterial called Triclosan.

Why we don’t use Triclosan in hand wash

Triclosan is a chemical used for its antibacterial properties and can be found in many daily use products such as detergents, soaps, deodorants and cosmetics, and is even added to plastics and textiles.

The safety of Triclosan has been questioned in regard to environmental and human health. Triclosan is a chlorophenol, a class of chemicals which is suspected of causing cancer in humans. Externally, phenol can cause a variety of skin irritations, taken internally, even in small amounts, phenol can lead to cold sweats, circulatory collapse, convulsions, coma and death.

Once absorbed into the fat cells, it is nearly impossible to eliminate. Employing a strong antibiotic agent such as Triclosan for everyday use in products such as antibacterial hand washes is of questionable value.

Antimicrobial formulas and disinfectants can also cause genetic mutations resulting in drug-resistant bacteria and mutant viruses, producing new strains of harmful microbes for which the human immune system has no defence.
