Banishing the bumps: a guide to Cellulite

This guide provides information on what cellulite is and what can cause it. We also offer helpful tips and advice on the best ways to get rid of cellulite through a combination of diet, body brushing, contrast showers, exercise and cellulite lotions.

What is cellulite?

Cellulite appears when an accumulation of fat cells grow too large for the natural fibres connecting the skin to the underlying layers of tissue.

As a result the fibres are stretched, creating a rippled appearance. It is typically found on the hips, bottom and thighs, but which can also be located on the arms and lower legs.

What can cause cellulite?

No-one is really sure why we get cellulite but it is most likely due to hormonal factors, which partly explains why women are more prone to it.

We do know that bad circulation, lack of exercise, poor diet, slow lymphatic draining and food allergies can contribute to cellulite.

How do I get rid of cellulite?

To fight cellulite, you need to strengthen and hydrate your body's cells and connective tissue in your body. Here's what helps:

  • Eating plenty of fresh fruits and leafy greens
  • Drinking lots of fresh water and herbal teas
  • Avoiding processed food and saturated fats
  • Including essential fatty acids in your diet
  • Exercising regularly to stimulate circulation
  • Body brushing twice a day

Cellulite and diet

A healthy eating plan will help to strengthen your overall inner health and can help improve cellulite-related functions, like lymph flow and blood circulation.

Start your day by drinking a glass of hot water with a squeeze of lemon. This helps to stimulate digestion, detox your liver and revitalise the body.

Add lots of fresh, organic fruit to your diet, such as pineapple, berries and apples. Fruits are rich in fibre, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals (eg. bioflavonoids and anti-ageing anthocyanidins), as well as water.

Body brushing stimulates your lymphatic system to rid itself of the toxins that collect in the lymph glands and helps control cellulite by bringing nutrients and oxygen to the upper layer of skin.

Body brushing can easily be incorporated into a daily routine. It just takes a few minutes of your time in the morning before your shower or bath and the health benefits are tremendous!

Contrast showers

The contrast between hot and cold water increases circulation, promotes detoxification and strengthens the immune system.

This helps bring nutrients, oxygen and immune cells to damaged and stressed tissues and carries away metabolic waste, inflammatory by-products and other toxic substances helping reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Start with three minutes of hot water followed by less than one minute of cold water. Repeat this pattern at least once, always finishing with cold (e.g. 3 minutes hot - 1 minute cold - 3 minutes hot - 1 minute cold).


Cellulite and exercise

Areas of your body such as your bottom and thighs are prime areas for exercise. Try strength training, it increases muscle tone and decreases total body fat.

Leg curls and squats with light weights are great for toning the thighs and buttocks. Don't use too heavy weights, consistency is the main goal.

Exercise with light weights 3 times each week. Your weight lifting exercise schedule can be as little as 15 minutes 3 days a week.

Circuit training is equally a great way to train. Circuit training fatigues the muscle groups helping to promote a reduction in actual size of the area, while decreasing the percentage of body fat.


Do cellulite creams really work?
