A natural emollient, built-in moisturiser and skin antioxidant, Squalane has so many beauty benefits that Vogue recently declared it a top skin care ingredient. We’re no stranger to Squalane skin care and here we reveal why we use this plant-based alternative to mineral oil in so many of our organic skin care products.
A BRILLIANT BARRIER
All humans are born with Squalene in their skin. It is produced by the sebaceous glands and performs a vital bodily function. Plant-derived Squalane in skin care products is converted to Squalene when it comes into contact with the skin.
Squalene binds itself to moisture found in sweat and the atmosphere and forms a seal on the outer layer of the skin. This protective layer helps trap hydration into the skin and helps filter out environmental aggressors, bacteria and allergens.
A HYDRATION HERO
In addition to helping to shield the body from harm, a healthy skin barrier maintains the skin’s hydration levels so that skin feels soft and comfortable. Healthy skin typically contains 10-13% Squalene but those with dry or eczema-prone skin typically produce lower levels of Squalene, and may benefit from the application of skin care products with Squalane.
Regularly applying a Squalane-based moisturiser or body lotion can help to boost hydration levels and relieve the discomfort of dry, tight skin.
Eczema-prone skin requires extra-special care to soothe irritated skin and repair the skin barrier. Packed with natural, skin-balancing properties Squalane is an incredibly ultra-gentle, anti-inflammatory, natural emollient.
This makes it perfectly placed to calm redness and irritation and the ideal ingredient for those prone to sensitive skin, eczema or psoriasis.
Unlike pore-clogging mineral oils, Squalane-based skin care won’t interfere with the skin’s ability to breathe and helps bring oily skin back into balance.
It’s non-comedogenic properties means that as well as being very helpful for dry and eczema-prone skin, its benefits can also be enjoyed by those with combination and oily skin.

A PLANT-BASED SKIN PLUMPER
Our natural Squalane levels decline with age and this makes Squalane skin care particularly helpful for delaying the signs of ageing. It is thought that the amount of Squalane our skin produces decreases from the age of 25 onwards and it can be as low as 5% in skin aged 50 and over.
The effect of this is that mature skin becomes drier, fine lines appear more pronounced and the skin seeks out alternative sources of hydration. The hydrating properties of Squalane are ideal for plumping ageing skin, and making it appear younger.
Premature skin ageing can be exacerbated by sun exposure so, if you are concerned about skin ageing, you should always apply a UV-protective sun cream to your skin before sun exposure. You can also help to reduce skin ageing by applying a moisturiser rich in Squalane after sun exposure.
Olive Squalane is rich in antioxidants and helps to combat the damage UVB light can cause deep within the skin tissue, where the first signs of ageing start.
It also has a unique molecular structure that differentiates it from other anti-ageing plant oils such as Rosehip oil, Coconut oil and Sunflower oil. This enables it to stimulate cell rejuvenation and makes Squalene, a bio-compatible secret weapon in the fight against skin ageing.
TOP TIP: Concerned about the first signs of ageing? Apply Scent Free Anti-Ageing 24 Hour Cream to the skin morning and night. Rich in Olive Squalane, this moisture-retaining cream also contains anti-ageing Baicalin which has been proven to actively reduce wrinkles on the skin of adults aged 30 and over.
