Discover the truth about SPF50 sun cream

It’s time to shed some light on the mysterious world of sun protection factors - what are they, why do we need them and how high is high enough? In the UK we find ourselves deprived of real sun exposure for a large part of the year so when summer comes we flock to beaches and parks to catch some long awaited sunshine.

Even when wearing a sun lotion the tanning process still causes damage to the skin and we are often uninformed about the long-term effects that a ‘summer glow’ can have on our skin. Most media attention is centred on the SPF protection that a lotion offers with not enough thought given to the long term damage to skin through UVA rays.

How high is high enough?

We are often told to reach for the highest SPF possible to protect ourselves and our children from the sun. But does an SPF50 really offer nearly double the protection of an SPF30? No! In fact an SPF30 lotion offers 97% protection against UVB rays, while SPF50 offers 98% protection – just 1% difference.

"SPF50 only filters out 1% more UVB light than SPF30"

There can be a tendency for people who use SPF50 sun lotions to reapply less frequently and stay in the sun longer than when they use lower factor sun lotions. This can dramatically increase your risk of sun damage because in order to get good UVA defence, you must regularly top up your protection no matter what the factor. Read more about UVA protection.

What about UVA rays?

Of course an SPF factor says nothing of the protection from UVA rays which cause the long term cell damage in the deeper layers of the skin. To maintain protection from both UVA and UVB rays it is more important to apply regularly and liberally than to choose a very high SPF sun cream.
