There’s more to effective sun protection than UV filters. Sunscreens with antioxidants are becoming increasingly popular thanks to the extra dimension of protection they can provide.Shop for antioxidant sunscreen.

Why use antioxidants in sunscreen?

When UV rays come into contact with your skin they can create what are known as ‘free radicals’. Free radicals are highly active molecules that can create a chain reaction of skin inflammation and damage, leading to premature skin ageing and even serious skin health issues.

Antioxidants, such as flavonoids found in a wide range of plants, are clinically proven to effectively fight free radical damage. They safely interact with and neutralise free radicals, helping to protect your skin against damage and keep your complexion looking fresh and radiant. This is why we make all Green People sunscreens with antioxidants.

Which natural antioxidants do we use?

To guard against free radical damage Green People handpicks a synergistic blend of natural antioxidants.

Green Tea, Edelweiss, Rosemary and Avocado are used in Green People’s antioxidant sunscreens to protect your skin from free radical damage and to provide a wide range of other skin benefits.

Edelweiss

Edelweiss is a remarkable plant that has evolved to live at high altitudes of 3,000 metres, where it must withstand ultra violet light levels that are particularly strong. Edelweiss extract contains high levels of antioxidants shown in trials to extend skin cell life when exposed to free radical activity.

Rosemary

Rosemary is rich in strong antioxidants called Terpenoids which that help to inhibit the action of free radicals and protect the skin from the visible signs of premature ageing. Rosemary also has natural anti-inflammatory properties, making it ideal for sensitive, irritated skin.

Avocado

Avocado contains a wide range of nutrients, including 11 vitamins and 14 minerals. Vitamins A, D and E act as powerful antioxidants which when applied topically are useful for healing sun-damaged skin and promoting natural collagen production.

Green Tea

People have benefitted from the antioxidant properties of Green Tea for centuries. An antioxidant active that’s ideal for use in Green People’s sunscreens, Green Tea provides Catechin antioxidants which act on free radicals created as a result of UV exposure. Green Tea also protects collagen to preserve the structure of the skin.

The internal sunscreen

As well as regularly applying sunscreen with antioxidants you can further protect your skin from sun damage by taking Green People’s antioxidant-rich supplement, Age Defy+ Green Beauty with Astaxanthin.

This highly active, nutrient-dense supplement contains concentrated antioxidants including Astaxanthin which is 10 times stronger than beta-carotene and up to 500 times stronger than vitamin E. Green Beauty also contains Seagreens®, Spirulina and Chlorella, all of which are antioxidant powerhouses in their own right.

Research shows that Astaxanthin works as an internal sunscreen, protecting you from the sun’s harmful rays from within, whilst also fighting the signs of skin ageing.

Start taking Green Beauty capsules two weeks prior to your holiday and whilst you’re away. Or you can incorporate them into your daily routine to keep your levels of protective antioxidants topped up all year round. Try emptying two capsules into a smoothie or juice to give it an extra superfood boost.
