Could doing a facial workout help your skin to shape up?

Could doing a facial workout help to tone your skin, or is it is just another anti-ageing facial fad? Here we reveal how facial yoga can help to keep skin supple and share 5 face yoga techniques for you to try at home.

What is facial yoga?

Sometimes referred to as face yoga, facial exercises are gentle, daily face movements designed to strengthen the muscles in the face and improve circulation.

Do facial exercises work?

Talking, blinking, smiling and frowning all require the use of muscles in the face, and during our lifetime some of these muscles can become fatigued and weak.

It is thought that working out these muscles could prolong their longevity so that the skin on the neck and face maintains a smooth, supple, youthful appearance.

Surely eating and talking are enough of a workout for your face?

Actually, they aren’t. Much like a workout at the gym, to see physical changes and results you need to target specific muscles in the face.

The chin, neck, throat and lips are thought to be particularly difficult to target but doing daily facial exercises could make these areas look younger.

Is there a downside to face exercise?

There are many benefits to facial exercises, but there is one downside: some people notice that their skin can become spotty or blemished when they start to do facial exercises.

If this happens, don’t worry. This is just because your skin is producing extra oils to make it suppler, and these oil levels will level out once your skin adapts to your facial exercise routine.

In the meantime, minimise your risk of spots by washing your face with our anti-blemish Foaming Face Wash and applying our Day Solution Moisturiser which is packed with prebiotics to help balance the skin’s flora.

Do your facial exercises daily at a time that is convenient to you. Whether you do your exercise in the day or at night it is important that you wash your face and hands before you start.

Facial exercises for neck and throat

  • Sit straight and look up at the ceiling. Close your mouth and make a chewing movement 20 times.
  • Sit straight and look up at the ceiling. Close and relax your lips then pucker them and stretch them towards the ceiling. Keep the lips puckered for a count of 10 and then relax and bring your head back to a neutral position. Repeat this facial exercise 5 times.

Facial exercises for eyes

  • Place two fingers on each of your temples and gently press whilst opening and closing your eyes rapidly. Repeat this facial exercise 5 times.

  • To reduce crow’s feet and puffiness gently tap the pads of the fingers along the skin around the eye. Start at the inside corner, work towards the outer edge, and then back towards the nose. Repeat this movement 10 times.
