Find out all you need to know about how to use AHA skin care with this easy-to-follow tutorial.
What is AHA skin care?
AHA stands for Alpha Hydroxy Acid which is naturally found in fruit, such as berries. Often used in face scrubs and face masks, AHA skin care is a great choice for those seeking a softer complexion and a healthy skin glow.
An incredibly popular beauty active, in 2021 AHA attracted around 33,100 monthly internet searches[i]. It has quickly gained a reputation for delivering a mild but effective exfoliating effect which smooths the skin and brings brighter cells to the surface.
Our AHA peel mask is a rinse-off natural face mask that is made with AHA fruit actives. To make the Age Defy+ AHA Radiance Peel Mask we use AHAs found in the active ingredients Bilberry, Orange and Lemon and blended these with Sugar Cane and Sugar Maple to create an AHA peel mask that gently exfoliates for a smooth, rejuvenated complexion.
Who can use AHA skin care?
All skin types can use our AHA skin care and we think that it is a great weekly skin brightening treat to help you retain a youthful and smooth skin glow.
Is AHA skin care suitable for sensitive skin?
If your skin is prone to irritation, you are right to wonder if AHA skin care is a safe choice for sensitive skin.
The purpose of an AHA is to exfoliate dead, dull cells on the skin surface but some AHAs have a small molecular size which means that they are able to reach deep in the skin and cause irritation. As such, exposing very sensitive skin to AHAs could cause some mild irritation.
To make our AHA Radiance Peel Mask suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, we formulate it using fruit extracts that contain naturally occurring AHAs. We blend these with nourishing plant oils from Cranberry, Rosehip and Pomegranate and then infuse the formulation with Aloe Vera which delivers intense hydration to new skin cells, protecting against irritation. Our natural AHA skin care is also free from artificial fragrances and ethyl alcohol.
If you know that your skin can be sensitive to AHAs we suggest initially patch-testing the mask on a small area and leaving it on for just a couple of minutes so that you can assess how well your skin tolerates the formulation.
Once you are happy that you skin does not feel irritated, you can gradually increase the length of time that you leave your face mask on for.
How to apply an AHA peel mask
As AHA peel masks are exfoliating skin care products that expose young, vulnerable skin cells to the surface, they should only be applied in the evening, with high-factor sun cream applied the following day.
To prepare your skin for an AHA peel mask, first perform a thorough evening cleanse. If you have worn make-up in the day, we suggest double cleansing by first using an oil-based cleanser, such as our Age Defy+ Ultimate Wonder Balm, to dissolve the make-up molecules.
Applying our AHA Radiance Peel Mask is easy. Simply dispense a little onto the hands and then smooth it onto freshly cleansed skin, taking care around the delicate eye area.
For optimum results, AHA skin care should be applied twice a week and left on for around 10 to 15 minutes. However, if you have very sensitive skin, we suggest that you patch test the product and then initially only leave the mask on for 2 or 3 minutes or until you are confident that its active will not irritate your skin.
If you do experience any skin discomfort whilst using AHA skin care, you should remove the mask immediately and thoroughly rinse the skin with lukewarm water.
How to remove an AHA peel mask
Removing your AHA Radiance Peel Mask is as easy as applying it. Once the mask has been on the skin for 15 minutes, simply rinse it off using lukewarm water.
When the skin is clean and dry it should feel noticeable softer. To prolong this skin-soft feeling, apply a fine layer of our overnight skin cream before bed.
What to use after an AHA mask
We suggest following our natural AHA mask with a deeply nourishing moisturiser. Our Age Defy+ Hydra-Glow Sleep Mask sinks in deep whilst you sleep to feed skin a bounty of replenishing nutrients that support its nightly repair processes. It also delivers intense hydration so that skin is less vulnerable to night-time water loss and you wake to soft, glowing skin.
