Is Baicalin the best skin care ingredient for defying the skin ageing process? Here we explore this wonder anti-wrinkle ingredient.
What is Baicalin?
Baicalin is a natural skin care ingredient extracted from the Baical skullcap plant. It has a remarkable anti-ageing effect on skin aged 30 and over and is a key ingredient in our organic anti-ageing skin care.
What are the skin benefits of Baicalin?
The science behind the skin care benefits of Baicalin is quite complex and involves structures called Telomeres and an enzyme called Telomerase.
TELOMERES: These are ‘caps’ at the end of chromosomes that protect genetic information during cell division. Without Telomeres the skin is vulnerable to ageing.
TELOMERASE: This enzyme found in every cell in the body and can repair Telomeres.
As we age our cells divide and this process causes damage to Telomeres. When this happens Telomerase enzymes counteract the Telomere shortening, preventing some damage.
During our mid-twenties the body stops making Telomerase and without this, any further damage to the Telomeres will be permanent. The effect of this is that our Telomeres get more damaged when they divide, eventually the cell can no longer divide and become so short that they die. This is what we see as the signs of ageing.
While it is impossible to completely stop the skin ageing process, and we cannot undo skin damage that has been caused by sun exposure, smoking or a poor diet, the brilliant thing about Baicalin in skin care is that it has been shown to trigger production of new Telomerase enzymes.
The effect of this will differ from person to person but studies have found that Baicalin helps to:
- Increase skin restructuring
- Increase skin firmness
- Increase skin elasticity
- Increase cell turnover rate
Which Green People products contain Baicalin?
Baicalin’s skin care benefits begin at a cellular level and for this reason we primarily use this ingredient in our organic eye creams and skin serums. Lighter than moisturisers, these products sink deep into the skin tissue and deliver hydration and nourishment to areas of the skin where wrinkles are formed.
How else can I prevent skin ageing?
In addition to introducing Baicalin to your skin care regime, there are many lifestyle changes you can make to keep your skin looking youthful.
Over time, your sleeping position can etch permanent pillow lines onto the skin surface. Those that sleep on their side are most at risk of these wrinkles but sleeping on your back could help keep the skin supple as you sleep.
The chemicals used in cigarettes are known to discolour the skin and age it prematurely.
A high sugar diet has been linked to the formation of wrinkles but as sugar is found naturally in fruit, and this is rich in skin boosting fibre and nutrients, it’s not always beneficial to remove sugar from your diet completely.
Instead, consider reducing your consumption of processed sugar and increase your intake of oily fish, brown rice and vegetables. These nutritious food groups all taste great and help to reduce the build-up of toxins that can age the skin.
When your skin is dehydrated wrinkles will be more pronounced. To keep skin well hydrated drink plenty of water and lock moisture in to the skin by applying our Cell Enrich Facial Oil on top of your serum or moisturiser.
MINIMISE SUN EXPOSURE
Shield your face from ageing UVA sun rays by wearing a broad-rimmed sun hat and applying a high-factor Facial Sun Cream daily. Reapply your sun cream regularly and always stick to the shade between 11am and 3pm.
Stimulate blood circulation in the skin by treating yourself to a facial massage. Regularly doing facial yoga exercises will further help to keep the skin healthy and supple.
Stress is another factor that can prematurely the age the skin and for your wellbeing, it is important that you take steps to reduce tension and anxiety. Could this be affecting your skin? Discover how to build a stress-relieving skin care kit.
