In the UK you may well find that you have dry, chapped hands during the cold winter weather months.

In this post we explain why hands are so vulnerable to winter dryness and share tips to keep your very dry hands feeling soft and nourished during spells of cold weather.

If you simply want a hand cream for dry hands in winter, take a peek at our Quinoa & Calendula Hand & Body Lotion

Why are my hands so dry in winter?

Hands have few sebaceous glands and that means they are more vulnerable to moisture loss than some other parts of the body.

You may experience dry hands during UK winters as this is when your hands are most exposed to the skin-drying effects of winter weather and central heating systems.

Why are my hands so dry in winter?

You may also find that you wash your hands more often in winter, which can leave your skin feeling dry and uncomfortable.

This is because many hand washes contain ingredients, such as soap, SLS and ethanol alcohol, that can impact the performance of skin barrier – the outer layer of skin on your hands. When the skin barrier becomes damaged, it loses its ability to protect against irritants and becomes more vulnerable to becoming cracked and dry.

It can be challenging to avoid alcohol-based soap completely as many places encourage the use of an alcohol-based hand rub to minimise the spread of winter viruses.

Whilst it is important to practice good hand hygiene to minimise the spread of germs, it is also important to be aware that, when applied to the skin, ethanol alcohol evaporates and strips away your skin’s natural moisture. This is one reason why medical professionals who wash their hands frequently are especially prone to dry hands.

Choose a hand wash for dry hands

We offer gentle, natural hand washes that are very kind to your skin. You may find that simply switching your hand wash makes a big difference to your dry winter hands.

Best winter hand cream for children

If your mini-me is also prone to dry hands in the winter, you can help them to develop healthy hand habits early by treating them to a children’s hand cream, such as our eczema-friendly Organic Children Berry Smoothie Hand Cream.

Review

A gentle kids’ hand cream that parents can trust to gently care for little hands, it has a soothing Aloe Vera base and is scented with a sweet berry aroma that kids love.

I always was looking for hand cream suitable for little hands. I was trying to find cream with more natural ingredients and then we tried Smoothie Berry Hand Cream for kids. It is amazing! Even my husband was surprised that cream feels very soft and does not leave an oily feel on hands. My daughter is going ice skating, so the difference between temps is not very good on her young skin and this cream just makes her hands soft and protecting from the temp changes every time. Nice product.” – Lina

5 winter care tips for very dry hands

Keep your hands feeling soft and healthy during cold weather with our tips for caring for very dry hands in winter.

  1. Switch hand wash: Choose a gentle hand wash that doesn’t dry out your skin.
  2. Moisturise frequently: Apply your hand cream after every hand wash, reapplying as and when needed to maintain hydration throughout the day.
  3. Nourish overnight: Skin rejuvenates at night, but it needs a little help. Smooth a rich hand cream onto your skin and then pop on a pair of cotton gloves to wake to soft and happy hands.
  4. Love your gloves: Protect your hands from detergents by wearing rubber gloves when cleaning or washing-up. Try to wear warm gloves when you are outside so that cold winter weather doesn’t wick away moisture.
  5. Care for cuticles with a calm balm: If your nails also feel the effects of winter, treat them to a little TLC with One Balm, our nourishing calm balm that can be used for cuticle care and to soothe dry skin anywhere.
