Why switch to Triclosan-free toothpaste & hand wash

When it comes to choosing hand wash and toothpaste, many believe that if it’s not antibacterial it’s just not good enough.

However, an increasing number of media reports are raising concerns that some synthetic antibacterial ingredients could be harming our health.

Here we look at the health concerns associated with Triclosan and explore why you may wish to make the switch to Triclosan-free toothpaste and toiletries.

What is Triclosan?

Triclosan is a synthetic anti-microbial agent that has seen increasingly widespread use since it was invented in the 1970s. Known to have strong antibacterial properties, Triclosan can be found in many daily-use products and is commonly used in detergents, soaps, toothpastes, deodorants and cosmetics.

Is Triclosan safe?

Concern about the safety of consuming Triclosan caused the European Union to ban Triclosan in materials that come into contact with food back in 2010.

Products like toothpaste, mouthwash and hand wash are still permitted to include this restricted ingredient but some new reports have claimed that this continued use of the ingredient could pose a threat to public health.

1. TO REDUCE THE RISK OF ANTIBIOTIC RESTISTANCE

Although good hand hygiene does help to reduce the spread of germs, there are concerns that the widespread use of triclosan could contribute to the increase of antibiotic resistance in some bacteriai.

Antibiotic resistance is a huge global health concern and some health experts believe there is strong evidence daily use of Triclosan based toiletries is accelerating the spread of thisii. As such, experts have called for more research into the safety and impact of widespread Triclosan useI.

2. TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT

In addition to compromising our heath, concerns are growing that Triclosan could pose a pollutant threat to our waterways.

When Triclosan is washed down the drain, it can enter our seas and rivers and alter the bacterial balance in this environment. This has led concerned ecologists to warn, “In triclosan-polluted streams and rivers, changes in microbial communities could negatively affect ecological function and animal communitiesiii."

Triclosan is thought to be harmful to algaeiv, a nutrient found in rivers and sea life that many fish feed from.

3. IT COULD BE BAD FOR YOUR BONES

It’s not just our immunity and ecology that could be compromised by Triclosan. In 2019 new research suggested that women who are regularly exposed to Triclosan could be at greater risk of the brittle bone condition Osteoporosisv.

While more research is needed to confirm that Triclosan use can affect bone density, those concerned about their risk of osteoporosis may wish to consider choosing Triclosan-free toiletries and cleaning productsvi.

4. IT MAY BE DETRIMENTAL TO OUR DENTAL HEALTH

Have you ever considered whether your toothpaste is causing more harm than good? The lining of the mouth is very delicate and frequent studies have linked commonly used toothpaste ingredients such as SLS and Triclosan to incidences of mouth ulcers.

Some studies claim that switching to an SLS-free toothpaste could reduce your likelihood of experiencing a mouth ulcer by as much as 60%. More recent media reports have suggested that mouth ulcers could be a sign of an allergy to Triclosanvii.

5. IT HAS BEEN LINKED TO PROBLEMS IN PREGNANCY

In addition to being troublesome for our mouths, Triclosan has hit the headline in recent years because of concerns that it could cause gender-bending hormonal issues. The ingredient is known to be an endocrine-disruptorviii and some reports have claimed that this makes Triclosan particularly hazardous for pregnant women.

A study by the American Chemical Society reveals the link between the compound and a decrease in newborn birth weights in animals.

Study contributor Benny Pycke of Arizona University was reported as saying, “Evidence is increasingly showing the compounds can lead to developmental and reproductive problems in animals - and potentially in humans.”ix
