Antiperspirants, sprays and roll-ons: your guide to deodorants

Is a natural deodorant the right choice for you? This guide explores the differences between roll-on deorants and spray antiperspirants so that you can make the best choice for your skin and your sustainability values.

In the UK, many people have switched from synthetic spray antiperspirants to natural deodorants, and demand continues to grow. In fact, in 2022, Mintel reported that 51% of Brits who haven't already made the switch are interested in using them.

So why are so many making the natural deodorant switch? Well, it’s partly due to a preference for more sustainable skin care. But that’s not the only factor at play here. Savvy skin care shoppers are swatting up on antiperspirant allergens, leading some to seek a safer, skin-kind way to fight BO.

Is a natural deodorant the right choice for you? Scroll on to discover everything you need to know about roll-on and spray deodorants.

Why use a deodorant?

In the UK, many people use deodorant or an antiperspirant daily. Effective at neutralising BO, these are applied to the armpit and play a pivotal part in keeping you feeling fresh throughout the day,

Most of us will start using deodorant during puberty, as this is when BO starts to become more noticeable. Why? Well, it's all thanks to a breed of bacteria called Staphylococcus hominis. While the sweat that your skin is odourless, this strain of Gram-positive bacteria feeds on the salts and nutrients that sweat contains, releasing an unpleasant BO smell.

The more bacteria you have on your skin, the stronger your BO can be, so in addition to applying deodorant daily, we recommend regularly washing the skin under your armpits.

Roll-on deodorant or spray antiperspirant?

Whether you use a roll-on deodorant or a spray antiperspirant is a matter of personal choice. We created a roll on deodorant vs spray antiperspirant comparison chart so that you can decide which is best for you.

At Green People, we believe in creating ultra-gentle, natural deodorants that work.

Green People deodorants

Our deodorants are certified organic, dermatologically tested and clinically proven to be kind to sensitive skin. They’re kind to the planet, too, and are predominantly packaged in repurposed plastic, which can be recycled once again after use.

While they're gentle on sensitive skin, they’re tough on BO. That’s because we formulate them using a three-way action that restricts the bacteria that cause BO while also caring for the delicate underarm skin.

Our skin-friendly ingredients

Ingredients you’ll see on our deodorant labels include:

  • Prebiotics: To promote the growth of beneficial, protective bacteria in the skin and inhibit the growth of bacteria that cause BO.
  • Zinc Ricinoleate: This mineral helps stop odour molecules from becoming airborne.
  • Potassium Alum: This mineral salt helps prevent odour-causing bacteria from multiplying without blocking pores.
  • Aloe Vera: A natural ingredient known to soothe and hydrate.
  • Shea Butter: This natural ingredient has anti-inflammatory properties to help soothe the skin.

Ingredients that you won’t find in our products include parabens, ethyl alcohol, aluminium and artificial perfumes.

Instead, we fragrance our range of organic deodorants using natural scents from essential oils. If you have particularly sensitive skin, our Scent Free Deodorant is free from all fragrance, including essential oils.

What to expect when switching to a natural deodorant

Deodorants do not prevent the body from producing sweat but instead target the bacteria that cause BO.

At first, switching from a chemical-based antiperspirant to a natural deodorant might cause a change in the amount you sweat. This is natural and should resolve quickly, leaving you with soft, fresh underarms with pores that can breathe.

The safe natural earth minerals and plant extracts in Green People’s range of seven roll-on deodorants work together in a three-way action. When used together with good basic hygiene, they’ll provide you with safe, scented, natural freshness free of chemicals that suppress the vital function of perspiration.
