Avoiding the hairdresser? It’s not easy keeping long hair healthy so here we share our tips for keeping long manes well maintained.
How often should you wash long hair to keep it healthy?
While natural shampoos are great for cleansing dirt and product build-up from the hair follicles, some shampoos contain synthetic ingredients known to disturb the scalp’s production of natural oil.
Lathering SLS-based shampoos into the hair too often can strip away scalp oils, cause the scalp to produce excess oil, and mean that your long hair gets greasy quicker.
Over-washing long hair can also fade-out hair dyes faster, while frequently blow drying places a further strain on delicate hair follicles.
Most hair types will benefit from not being washed with shampoo every day. We recommend that those with normal hair types cleanse long hair with a scalp-balancing SLS-free shampoo 2-3 times a week.
Always dry the hair before styling and keep heat exposure to a minimum by holding the hairdryer 15-20cm away from the hair.
Best shampoo to strengthen long hair
Quinoa protein is a great ingredient for adding strength to long hair and our Quinoa & Artichoke Shampoo is a great choice for adding a healthy shine to all hair types.
Best shampoo for long dyed hair
Formulated with Green Tea and colour-lock Quinoa, these long-lasting, hydrating hair care products keep dyed hair from looking dull and dry.
Best shampoo for greasy long hair
If your hair gets greasy quickly, try slowly phasing out your shampoo use by initially washing the hair every other day with an Irritated Scalp Shampoo that provides gentle cleansing action for oily hair.
How often should you condition long hair to keep it healthy?
Long hair can be particularly vulnerable to split ends but treating your hair to a deeply conditioning hair mask once a week will deliver a dose of extra nutrients and stop long hair from looking limp and brittle.
For the best conditioner for long hair choose a conditioner made without silicones. This waxy ingredient coats the outside of the hair but is hard to wash out and can stop moisture from penetrating the hair shaft. All Green People conditioners are silicone free.
Dicover 3 natural ways to condition long hair
WITH A NATURAL HAIR MASK
To strengthen and replenish your long hair apply our silicone-free organic conditioners to the ends of your hair and wrap the hair in a warm towel for 10 minutes. Do this once a week and always thoroughly rinse the hair after conditioning.
WITH LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER
You can also help to keep hair well-conditioned in between washes by taking a kelp food supplement or applying a leave-in conditioner. Our Quinoa & Avocado Hair Serum is packed with nourishing plant proteins and can be left in to lightly condition hair ends, smooth frizz and tame wispy bits.
WITH A PRE-WASH
Making a conditioning pre-wash hair product is easy. Simply combine half a cup of organic olive oil with 5 drops of frankincense essential oil and give it 24 hours to blend. Work the mixture through damp hair and cover the hair with a shower cap for 30 minutes, before washing the hair as usual.
Do you need to brush long hair every day?
It’s not essential to brush your hair everyday but regular hair brushing has many benefits for both the hair and scalp:
- Releases dead hair and skin cells from the scalp so that healthy younger cells and follicles can flourish
- Stimulates circulation in the scalp and reduces the risk of an itchy, flaky scalp
- Prevents hair-weakening tangles which can lead to breakages
