The benefits of prebiotic skin care

Our organic skin care is packed with powerful plant actives that help re-balance the skin, but did you know many of our products also contain prebiotics? Here we explain what prebiotics are and why we add them to so many of our natural formulas.

Prebiotics can make a big difference to your skin’s microbiome by neutralising the effects of acne bacteria.

If you have spot-prone skin or sensitive skin, read on and discover the many benefits of prebiotic skin care products.

What is a prebiotic?

Prebiotic is the name given to the food source of probiotics. Known as ‘good bacteria’, probiotics are tiny micro-organisms that help protect the body from ‘bad’ types of bacteria.

Found in the skin’s microbiome, ‘bad’ bacteria’ can quickly multiply and if it begins to outnumber  ‘good’ bacteria on the skin surface, this can result in the acne, inflammation or bad body odours.

If you have a healthy, balanced diet it is likely that you are consuming a proportion of prebiotics and probiotics.

Probiotics are commonly found in ‘live’ foods such as yoghurt whilst prebiotics are found in green vegetables, whole grains and fruits such as bananas and berries.

Whilst research into the health benefits of prebiotics and probiotics is still in relative infancy, researchers consider the bacteria to have potential for offering immune support and some suggest that some probiotics could even help prevent skin disorders such as eczema.

Why does Green People add prebiotics to its skin care?

The skin’s microbiome is vulnerable to bacterial imbalances, which can cause problems like acne and body odours to develop.

We add prebiotics to our organic skin care products so that they support your skin’s microbiome. Once applied to the skin, the prebiotics will support good bacteria and set to work inhibiting bad bacteria to bring the microbiome back into balance.

Best prebiotic face cream for sensitive skin

If your skin is prone to sensitivity, the safest way to incorporate prebiotic skin care into your beauty regime is by using scent-free beauty products. The Scent Free Light Day Moisturiser is the unscented prebiotic moisturiser that we recommend for spot-prone sensitive skin.

This gentle, non-comedogenic day cream supports the skin barrier as it brings balance to the microbiome to gently calm blemishes and redness. It is a great moisturiser for those whose skin is easily irritated by astringent spot creams and anti-blemish moisturisers.

Its anti-inflammatory actives include hydrating Seaweed, nutrient-rich Avocado Oil, soothing Perilla Oil and Chamomile, an extract renown for quickly calming skin inflammation and restoring skin comfort.

Its anti-blemish action comes from skin-balancing Prebiotics which work in synergy with sebum-balancing Jojoba Oil and Willow Bark Extract, which is rich in anti-inflammatory Salicin and reduces irritation while controlling further breakouts.

Green People’s Oy Clear Skin Goals Gift Set cleansing routine is specifically formulated to support a healthy skin balance and features a prebiotic called Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide.

Used in the prebiotic face wash Oy Clear Skin Cleansing Moisturiser, it supports a healthy skin balance while Willow Bark & Green Tea reduce inflamed spots and restrict the growth of bad bacteria.

Encourage your teen to apply this after cleansing with the Oy Clear Skin Foaming Face Wash and together these products will decongest and balance the skin without causing irritation or stimulating excess sebum production.

To reduce scarring, target spots as soon as they emerge with the Oy Clear Skin Purifying Serum before smoothing on the Oy Clear Skin Cleansing Moisturiser. These both contain regenerating Rosehip which can help to restore skin smoothness.

Older teens and those still experiencing oily skin in their 20 and 30s may prefer to use our Oil Balance Moisturiser which combines the benefits of 5 spot-fighting actives into one hydrating face cream for combination and oily skin.

Willow Bark Extract provides a natural anti-inflammatory action and quickly calms red and irritated acne. To prevent pimples returning, Prebiotics work in synergy with purifying Pineapple Extract, Jojoba and Rose Geranium to decongest pores, slow sebum production and balance the skin's natural flora.

To help your anti-blemish moisturiser absorb, exfoliate once a week or detox the skin by applying our Purifying Face Mask. After use oily skin will feel soft, mattified and ready to utilise the skin-balancing actives in your anti-blemish moisturiser.
