If there’s one hero ingredient that we couldn’t live without here at Green People, it would have to be Aloe Vera.
Used as a base in all but a handful of our products, Aloe Vera has unrivalled natural skin benefits and contains at least 75 nutrients, 20 minerals, 12 vitamins, 18 amino acids, and 200 active enzymes.
This article looks at the beauty benefits of Aloe Vera, including the benefits of Aloe Vera for hair, scalp and skin.
You will also discover what makes Aloe Vera so effective and why a good quality Aloe Vera juice is key to unlocking the benefits of this supernatural succulent.
What is Aloe Vera?
Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis) is a flowering succulent plant that is a member of the Aloe genus. The word ‘vera’ means ‘real’ or ‘true’ and indicates that this was considered the basic plant from which other Aloe varieties have evolved.
This natural powerhouse has a history of use that can be traced back over 6,000 years, when the ancient Egyptians called it the ‘plant of immortality’ and it was used as a burial gift to deceased pharaohs.
Aloe Vera is cultivated in many different countries and has many valuable properties, being used in foods, medicines and cosmetics. Aloe barbedensis miller is the most powerful of the Aloe genus and is the most commonly used in cosmetics.
Why we use organic freeze-dried Aloe Vera
To produce a good quality gel for cosmetic use, mature Aloe leaves are harvested and the tips, base and spiny sides of the leaves are removed. The outer green skin is then carefully removed and returned to the fields as fertilizer.
It is important to extract juice only from the inner gel as all other parts of the plant contain irritants including aloin.
The inner leaf is then juiced, filtered and freeze-dried within 2 hours of being harvested to retain all the health benefits of the leaf juice.
Freeze-drying extends the shelf-life of Aloe Vera to 5 years without the need for preservatives, so nothing is added to this 100% pure, organic product.
Unlike freeze-dried Aloe, fresh Aloe juice always needs added preservatives, such as sodium benzoate, and will only have a shelf-life of up to 12 months even if preservatives are added.
1kg of freeze-dried Aloe Vera is the equivalent of 200kg fresh leaf juice so freeze-drying also makes it more environmentally friendly.
By reducing the volume of product that needs to be transported, less energy is used in getting the beneficial juice from the field and into your cosmetics.
Aloe Vera is used as the main water-phase ingredient in most Green People products. We rehydrate the freeze-dried powder back to its original strength immediately before incorporating it into the formulation.
As the freeze-dried concentrate (200:1) is made from certified organic Aloe barbadensis leaves, and because we reconstitute it back to its original strength before incorporating the juice into our products, the reconstituted juice is 100% certified organic.
Aloe Vera skin care and body care
Aloe Vera is known for its skin soothing and healing properties. It is also an excellent moisturiser that helps to keep the skin hydrated and increases elasticity. This makes it an ideal ingredient in anti-ageing skin care products such as moisturisers, serums and cleansers.
It also works wonders as a base in body care products such as shower gels, hand creams and body lotions.
High street shower gels can be drying on your skin as they often contain harsh ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and drying alcohol.
Green People organic Aloe Vera shower gels cleanse your skin gently and effectively without stripping your skin’s beneficial oils.
Green People uses Aloe Vera as a base in all skin and body care products (except oils and balms). These natural Aloe Vera skin products deliver an instant moisture infusion to all skin types and are gentle on ultra-sensitive and even eczema and psoriasis-prone skin.
Aloe Vera benefits in sun care
It is well known that Aloe Vera is an effective, natural skin healer and is used widely as an ingredient in after sun.
But despite appearing prominently on the packaging of many high street after suns, it may only be used at low levels.
Add to this the chemical nasties found in some after sun lotions, such as drying alcohol and mineral oil, and the benefits of the Aloe Vera may be all but cancelled out.
Green People uses extremely high levels of Aloe Vera, for example our sun lotions contain up to 70% organic Aloe Vera and our After Sun contains over 80% Aloe Vera.
Green People uses organic Aloe Vera combined with naturally calming and restorative plant oils and extracts, such as Calendula, Chamomile, Peppermint and Myrrh to gently soothe sun-tired skin and deliver deep, lasting hydration.
Aloe Vera toothpaste benefits
According to a study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Aloe Vera juice helps to maintain healthy gums by reducing bleeding, inflammation and swelling. It has powerful antiseptic and antifungal properties to aid cleaning and it may help reduce the risk of infection.
Green People organic Aloe Vera toothpaste harnesses the benefits of Aloe Vera and is gentle on sensitive gums.
The deliciously fruity flavours of Organic Children toothpastes, such as Mandarin & Aloe Vera, (as well as classic Mint) are perfect for fussy children and make teeth cleaning fun!
Adults can also enjoy the benefits of Aloe Vera toothpaste with Green People’s range of organic dental care. Choose from natural flavours such as Minty Cool with Spearmint and Peppermint, or Fennel & Propolis for a mint-free option.
As well as organic Aloe Vera these natural toothpastes also contain Myrrh, which has powerful antiseptic and anti-inflammatory qualities.
Tip: massage a small amount of our natural toothpaste into sore or irritated gums for a soothing overnight treatment. If your gum problems persist, please seek advice from your dentist.
Aloe Vera hair benefits
The essential nutrients and vitamins that are present in Aloe Vera make it an ideal ingredient for shampoos and conditioners. Combined with oils like Avocado and Jojoba, Aloe Vera is intensely conditioning and helps to restore shine, leaving your hair smoother and silkier.
Aloe Vera also helps to balance the natural pH levels of your hair and scalp, which supports healthy hair growth and retains moisture in the scalp, reducing the dryness that can lead to dandruff
The polysaccharides in Aloe Vera juice help to lock moisture onto the hair shafts and the scalp, reducing dryness and helping to control frizz. In addition, the amino acids in Aloe Vera add strength and lustre to the hair.
Unlike shampoos that contain other smoothing agents such as silicones, Green People’s organic Aloe Vera shampoos do not cause build-up on the hair surface, which can lead to dullness.
Aloe Vera deodorant
The soothing and healing properties of Aloe Vera make it the nourishing ingredient in natural deodorant.
For those who shave their underarms, Aloe can help to reduce irritation and inflammation, whilst balancing and smoothing the delicate underarm skin.
For those with sensitive underarms, Aloe Vera is ultra-gentle and helps to calm and hydrate the skin, reducing dryness and irritation.
Green People’s effective, natural deodorants contain high levels of organic Aloe Vera (between 70 and 80%) and are free from drying alcohol and pore-clogging aluminium.
Their powerful 3-way antibacterial action eliminates odour-causing bacteria and feeds the good bacterial flora, helping to restore a healthy skin balance.
