How breastfeeding creams help sore nipples

Breastfeeding can cause all kinds of discomfort and if you’ve ever experience cracked, sore nipples, you’ll know that the quick relief a good soothing nipple cream can bring is priceless.

With regular application and the right blend of skin-healing actives, a natural nipple cream can help to speed up the rate at which the skin restores itself so that you feel more comfortable when breastfeeding.

How to use nipple cream

Made with natural organic ingredients which are safe to leave on the nipples during feeds, our Mum and Baby Rescue Balm gives its most soothing relief when gently massaged onto the nipples.

Many of our HQ staff are mums and we used our first-hand experiences to create a multipurpose rescue balm that time-short mums could use to quickly soothe everything from cracked nipples to hands left dry from frequent nappy changes.

To make this natural sore nipple cream safe for all skin types, it doesn’t contain Lanolin, fragrance or any essential oils, which may irritate ultra-sensitive skin. We also advise that, if your nipples are very cracked and irritated, you patch test any skin care before you apply it.

PROTECT WHILST YOU PUMP

Not everyone chooses to breastfeed. Our soothing Mum & Baby Rescue Balm can also be used to protect the nipple whilst you pump.

7 natural ingredients which help to soothe nipples

Our Mum & Baby Rescue Balm is so good at soothing nipples because it contains the following actives with skin-protective properties.

SUNFLOWER SEED OIL: Sunflower Seed Oil contains high levels of skin-healing Vitamin E and it is also one of the best sources of Linoleic Acid. This reinforces the skin barrier and anchors moisture into the skin so that you’re protected against the raw feeling you experience when the nipples are dry and sore.

BEESWAX: Our Beeswax is ethically sourced and makes a brilliant barrier cream. Natural and non-toxic, it forms a breathable seal on the skin’s surface to lock in moisture and leave the skin around the nipples soft, supple and hydrated.

SWEET ALMOND OIL: Sweet Almond is very softening and helps comfort dry, tight skin by balancing skin water levels and feeding restorative fatty acids into the skin around the nipples. This plant-based nipple cream ingredient also absorbs slowly into the skin so is excellent for providing long-term protection against dry nipples.

CALENDULA: Calendula calms inflamed, irritated  skin and is the ingredient you can rely on to quickly soothe sore nipples. Ultra gentle, Calendula is used in many of our mother and baby products and its moisturising, softening properties mean it is ideal for relieving nipple discomfort after breastfeeding.

HEMP: Restorative Hemp relieves discomfort fast and is one of the world’s richest sources of polyunsaturated fats, including both Omega-3&6 essential fatty acids. An excellent natural emollient and moisturiser, it soothes damaged skin whilst helping to replenish dry areas with soothing hydration.

PALM OIL: This is another Vitamin E rich active; it is so important to the skin healing process because it delivers Tocotrienols deep into the skin’s layers to enable healing and protection from the base up. Palm Oil also contains Vitamin A which helps give skin elasticity and flex whilst also supporting repair work needed to damaged cell structure.

SHEA BUTTER: Shea Butter absorbs easily into the skin and because it has great affinity to water it’s very effective at moisturising dry skin by locking water into the upper layers. It is also high in the fats and Vitamins A and E that damaged skin need to heal itself.

These gentle plant actives are all safe to leave on the skin in between feeds and are suitable for all skin types.

More tips for soothing sore nipples

If regularly applying a natural nipple cream doesn’t help the soreness you experience because of breastfeeding or expressing milk, mention it to your Health Visitor, GP, Pharmacist or the experts at baby clinics.

They’ll have lots of techniques that you can try to help your baby’s latch and you to feel more comfortable during feeds.

You can also try using nipple shields or a nursing pillow to protect your nipples whilst they heal.

Everyone struggles with breastfeeding at times but once the initial problems are overcome, you’ll soon be able to make it an enjoyable bonding time for you and your baby!
